I was exhausted when I got home last night. Too tired to even process photos! Anyway I had a great time and thanks to everyone for being so friendly. Here are some of my pics. The kookaburra was in the zoo grounds and was the perfect model!

Tony was happy to see me back smiling with lots of photos. He was even happier this afternoon when I brought his favourite chocolates home.

I don't think Kipper went to see the 500mm today. He should be back in Melbourne by now.

Have you done much PP on the last two or is that effect achieved purely by careful use of DOF?
I'm curious and am trying to learn!

That effect was created by DOF. DOF is more limited when you're closer to something. Also the longer the focal length the more limited the DOF is. The meerkat background was the sand/dirt in the background. With the Kookaburra, I noticed there was a tree in the background and hence the green background.

Excellent shots, Nicole. The bridge shot looks a little soft to me, though, compared to the others, which are tack sharp. Very well done!

I love your zoo images. Please post more. These couple are incredibly sharp. Looks like the meercat also just finished something to eat.

The zoo morning sounds like a blast. I opted to stay home and attend a family do but would have loved to join you all and learn a couple (or a bazillion) of things.

I particularly like the first two shots and the last two animal shots. That said, the bridge shot does somehow seem to lack punch, despite the good composition. The first animal shot is a bit of a worry. Slighty too ugly for my tastes. Good job my shirt was tucked into my pants or it would be even scarier

Perhaps I should have titled that third photo "Can someone please ID this animal?".

So many photos and I did go a bit crazy at the zoo!

Top shots Nicole. Especially like the Grass POV for the Bridge and the Meekat and Kookaburra. You missed out on seeing the Sacred Kingfisher and the Azure Kingfusher (pretty sure it was Azure, either that or Little but he had his back to us).

I have been to the zoo many times and am familiar with the meerKat and the kokaburra....but the creature in the blue hat is an entirely new species to me.

I believe that they are more usually found around wetland regions north of here and only venture south during lenslust season.
Also known to be enticed to come out when an exotic flora called hunter red is on offer.

Meerkats lunch is still smeared all over its face. Funny shot.

Quite correct.

And they're also often seen in the company of that other, frequently nocturnal, specie, vino rosso.
