AW - Black & White

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Some images taken over the Anniversary Weekend that I felt lent themselves to a black & white treatment (there are a few more pics here if you are interested). Click an image for a larger version.

Hi Peter,

I'm a big fan of B&W at the moment as you know and #3 is pretty cool. The treatment is great. Nice and punchy. I like that one a lot.

Not too keen on 1 and 2 i'm afraid. The B&W is good but the sunject doesn't hold my attention.

i stared at the first for about a minute before i realized it is a lamp, Nice. The second appears Flat? not sure how else to describe it otherwise, but I do really like the third as well. After hours I'm assuming since no people, very interesting.

Thanks for the comments guys. #3 is by far the one I like the most. In fact I'm still tinkering with the B & W treatment.

Matt I used the nik color efex B & W filters for these (there are three tunable types of B & W filters) - they are something I suggest you have a look at.

Andy the third shot was taken while lots of people were around (at 11:00 am). It's at the finger Wharf at Wooloomooloo (Sydney) and was shot through glass security doors. The area is in two halves. One for the peasants and one for the rich people. This is looking from the peasant area into the rich area (if you look close you can see the reflections on the glass door). The rich area is apartments and there is a security coded area for access. The peasant area is hotel & function area and access is unrestricted.

birddog - you're right the B & W CF card is dead easy to use - it's really improved my shots over use of the standard colour ones.

Just one last B & W to add. This time it's the Opera House:

I love the first shot. I really like reflections. I'm really starting to like b&w pics.

Thanks Monty. There's a lot you can do with B & W and a lot of ways to do it. You should play around with it a while.
