comments and critiques please folks, my 2 year old godson Rory, got to thinking this would be nice printed up and framed on his mum n dads wall?

D70 with kit lens, wide open at 70 mm.
levels and contract adjusted then simply fully de-saturated in PCS2

i keep trying to crop the L/H side a bit but just end up with a little fella with a big pointed head

....... have you tried shooting in raw and using the raw processor to convert to B&W ....... you will find that it gives a better tonal range....and very easy.....

Nice clear shot there Chris, I think his parents would be proud to have it framed and hanging on the wall. If I were to make ANY comments, I would say that (on my monitor) the bottom middle to right section is a bit too dark...but this is very subjective. You've captured Rory very well!

Bigpix - thanx for the heads up on the desaturating from NEF...like it!

big pix - further to comments here and elsewhere i will be working in NEF form here on in, the D70 is currently switched for NEF capture, i just have not taken it 'into the field' as yet.

geoff - hope you got some sleep in the end!
thanks for the comments - the dark section you refer to looks fine at home but, oddly enough, dark on my work monitor, i'm gonna find a professional online lab to send it for printing so i'll see how it looks on print!

Overall -i know there are more compicated, and ultimately more accurate / satisfying ways to convert to b+w but, for my first 5 minute effort i was rather pleased

Best dash - whilst you guys are just home and setting up the barbie, im just logging in at the coal face........

BP - I just did what I should have done last night, and I swapped your image from my LCD to the CRT and it looks FINE on the CRT, of course...a lab will make this pic look like a million bucks!

........ just remember after RAW processing, and opened in Photoshop..... when saving use the SAVE AS option and your original file stays as shot, or last processed, to be reprocessed again and again and again...... always use SAVE AS as part of your work flow......

Geoff - oddly enough it looks fine on my LCD at home, not so hot on the CRT at work.......

big pix - first thing i do is save a copy of my image then i always 'save as' on anything i have worked on - all 'best practice' and not just for those on the learning curve!........
