AW - Australian Heritage Fleet Visit

Well we had a great time at the Heritage Fleet this morning... I could have stayed there all day taking photos... Thanks to Sheepie for organising that...

All the volunteers there welcomed us warmly and didn't mind having their photos taken... All were willing to chat about what they were doing and why... We were taken on a tour of the workshop and shown all the various boats that they maintain.

We were then let loose on the wharf and boats for a while to do our own thing...
After that, we donned hard hats and were taken on a tour of the John Oxley - a large steamship that they are restoring... An enormous restoration project.

Photo opportunities were everywhere and I've posted a gallery of my better shots - no detailed PP yet, just web processing...

I have just started PPing a few of mine from the bridge walk... Some turned out very nice... the sky out there today was just awesome and CPs worked very very well...

That was a great event. Weather was just right, site workers open and a lot of opportunities to find good subjects. This guys do fantastic job on this ship. I would like to see it once will be finished.

Before I put up some of my pictures from this fantastic morning, I'd like to thank those that came for the effort they made, and the way they conducted themselves - well done, I'm sure the guys from the Heritage Fleet appreciated our interest as much as we appreciated their time

Leek - I really like your Grinding shot - light, framing and timing all work together well (I tried a couple of times for a similar shot, but my timing was really bad - by the time I got into position he stopped grinding!)

Kristian (krpolak) - Your closeup shots in particular are great - as we discussed on the day, it would be nice to just wander around there for a day taking this sort of shot. Looks like you have a good eye, it was good to meet you

Looking forward to other shots from the morning from you two, and the others that came

Now - my shots (or at least a selection - I'm about half way through basic PP'ing, will do more later and then spend a bit of 'quality time' on some that warrant it)...

Mostly taken with my new Nikon 12-24DX - which I gotta say was ideal for the mostly enclosed conditions of this shoot

Compressor House:

(This is housed in a standard container - there's a couple of these containers, one used as a workshop and this one for the compressor, etc.)

Manual Work:

(Taken with the 50mm 1.8 )

Rivot Oven:

(They heat the rivots up in this - unfortunately, they weren't able to do any Hot Rivoting on the day, as the compressor failed )

Undercover Coal:

(How cool is this! Tiny area, and look at the great metering system at work! Minimal Post Processing)

I might pop down there again sometime... they didn't seem to mind us walking around the open areas and there are SO many subjects waiting to be photographed...

The boats viewed, stories heard, sights and sound of the ship yard, just wonderful.

Yeah, it's a really cool spot.

I reckon an interesting way to explore it would be to assign each member of the party a different lens to use exclusively, and see what they come back with:
eg: 50mm, 12-24, kit lens, 70-200, 35mm, etc.

There's so many different things to take in, and a challenge like that would create some interesting perspectives on it all

I dont know how this part is called in profesional language, but it a bottom part of yacht fin. There were couple yachts beside the site. Nobody wandered there  BTW, quite a few good shots have popped up till now. I like Sheepie's 'Undercover Coal' and other one with boat. And yours 31068351-L is interesting as well.

K.Polak PS: I like your shot. Well balanced sky gives impact for the ship. Also mess around seem to support solid fuselage. This photo shows very well feeling about the site. The only thing I would critique is that whole image leans toward left side.
