Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Love the composition and colors Leek. However I'm sure Senior Constable Stubbsy of the Halo Division will write you a ticket for excessive halination. :)

Well before he does... let me tell you that the blue / purple background is totally fake and I purposefully used a gradient away from the eyes to the edge of the picture...

Thanks Geoff, it was taken today at an Italian festival in Five Dock... lots of stalls, coffee and music (Volare!!!) and other entertainment... There were also entertainers on stilts dressed up in Carnevale outfits... One of them formed the subject for my "Il Sole Bello" post and another the subject for my entry in the Blue Challenge.

The short answer is - Lots!!!

Here is the original... Image

I can't remember everything, but From memory:
- I erased the cluttered background using the Eraser (it took a while, but I think it was worth it)
- extended the canvas upwards to hide the fact that I'd lost the top of the hat in composition
- Added a new layer.
- Selected 2 shades of blue and then used the Gradient tool centreing on the eyes and dragging to the right-hand side of the picture.
- Selectively lightened up the eyes a little using the dodge tool...
- I probably tweaked the curve - ever so slightly...
- I then resized to 900 width and then used Unsharp Mask 140, 1.4, 8
- Used canvas size to apply frame...
et Voila!!!

I am a mere beginner compared to some people here... I learnt most of what I know from MattK at one of the forum's workshops... Thanks anyway though...

Like the other shot, I think the image AFTER PP works and, John, I'm impressed with your patience and PP skills. It certainly makes for a MUCH better image having remoived the distracting background. Won't say anything about halation :shock:
