VP Day - Choppers by night (DL warning)

I missed VP day in Canberra on the weekend but i saw some choppers parked in a park by the lake on late on Sunday night. I was on my way home from Sydney. I had been in Sydney hoping to take some shots of the city to surf (long story) so luckily i had my camera in the car.

Here are my results. Most are long exposures, working on contrasting shots and silhouettes. What do you think? Too noisy?

wow.

WW, amazing stuff.

Walked straight past those choppers on the way home, had hired security wandering around them (and being all rent-a-cop painful).

Noise - hardly worth worrying about. Looks fine to me. If anything, it adds to the images.

Certainly a different take to the rest of our images. I especially like 5 & 7.

Good Job! I didn't even think to see if they stayed overnight. :D

Glad to hear you liked them Daniel.

The rent a cop was a classic. I was leaning right up against one of the smaller helicopters at one stage trying to take a shot and he was busy rumaging through his lunch box. It was pretty late though. You cant be alert and alarmed 100% of the time.

He he - i never have much say in the shots i could take Tristan. To tell you the truth - I was stoked to see something there left to photograph. Im very impressed by some of the other more classic VP shots on offer on the forum.

Those shots are amazing, I too didnt think to have a looksy later on that evening.. I guess with the Canberra residents so "sensitive" about noise they had to stay put.

I think a few people would have had the shock of they're life with 2 f-111's running around hehe

G'day WW,
I really like the feel of the first image, has a very foreboding, moody feel... Might be worth cloning out the wires and the lights (from buildings?) on the right hand side...

One question, why ISO640?

love the first shot for its backlighting and the 4th for the abstractness. The rivets are..um..err...rivetting. Sorry.

Great collection of shots, and provides a very different perspective to the daytime shots else where.

I liked shot 1, and 4 the most not exactly sure why.

Andrew - ISO was up that high because im a bit of a duffer and pushed it up a little because it was "dark". I think something around 400 would have been sufficient.

Glad you liked the first shot. Here is another one in a similar vein.

These are seriously wonderful images. Excellent composition and you have handled the exposure/lighting spot on. Very dramatic and creative. Go to the top of the class!

Cheers Matt. I had a whole lot of creativity left over after my less than spectacular city to surf experience in Sydney that morning. I had also consumed one of those horrible sickly sweet energy cans during the drive back to Canberra - which i must admit had me buzzing.

Is that the energy drink that turns a cockroach into a leopard tank? Maybe it can turn photographers into Richard Avedons and Bob Cappa's? 8) 8)

MHD - would you please expand on why it is distracting to you?

All of these shots look great as far as I'm converned, as somebody mentioend above, I think the slight noise adds to the shots. Favourite shots #3 & #4.

Sihouettes have something very specail about them. Great work mate.

I was actually thinking what a great idea the frames were... also thinking about stealing the idea

All the shots have such a great feel to them... Pity about the fence in some of them but what can you do :?

Cheers,
W00DY

HA - the security guard may have snapped out of his relaxed recline if I had started mucking around with the fences surrounding the expensive helicopters  :? .

Thanks for the feedback Woody
