It was my little mans birthday yesterday and so I gave the old D70 a good workout :)
Here is one of the pictures that I would love some advice on...
As you can see one of the girls is sharp and the other slightly out of focus

Image

Camera settings were
1/100
f4
On board flash in rear curtain slow

I think the answer is to go to f11 or 13 to give me a bit more depth of field. All suggestions greatly appreciated

Yes, you need to increase the DoF, but I would also like to see you do something about the WB here; this image is far too cool in its base colour cast.

Did you shoot this in raw or jpg?

If in raw, open the file in NC and play with your WB settings; If in jpg, the task is harder, but I'd be reducing the cyan to warm this up somewhat.

Use the white top of the leftmost child as your guide; look closely at the shadow colour on, for instance, her shoulder. You should try to bring this colour back to a neutral white. As you do this, you will find that the skin tones will become far more natural and the whole image will benefit as a result.

Otherwise, this is a great capture with delightful expressions on the kids' faces.

Many thanks for your comments Gary.

To answer the question yes I shoot RAW. I have final been convinced afer spending way too much time in PS. (Actually the graphic artist at work spending way to much time fixing my poor shots :) )

That is a fairly obvious suggestion for colour balance.... So obvious I didn't even think about it :( And I work in TV..... Oh the shame

thanks again[/quote]

Mal - Gary has a good tip on DOF there.

Did you autofocus this shot? When focussing portraits you should also conisder focussing on the subject closest to the camera. In this case the girl in white.

I think you wll find the focal range going away from the focal point will be deeper than the focal range coming towards the subject.

as Gary said
id play with the colour balance a bit

say somthing like

cyan - red +34
magenta - green +9
yellow - blue -11

cute photo :)
