Bolte Bridge panorama

Just finished playing around with this image from last week. Its my first go at this type of picture, both with the camera and photoshop.

Image info (no doubt id be asked for it) :) ...

Nikon D70s, 50mm f1.8 lens, 20 seconds, f20 at ISO200 X 4

I like the bridge and its reflection in the water, but the foreground seems too busy and detracts from the bridge.

I wonder if you could get closer and try it without the distractive elements.

Other than that I like it a lot.

Embi - i know what you mean! I went for a walk down to where you can see the boat in the middle of the picture so i would avoid the busy forground you mentioned but it was a floating pontoon, i didnt think that would have been a good idea to shoot off that. :lol:

There are other places that are closer but they are doing alot of work down there atm and most of the good areas are closed off now. Shame really because its also a good area to shoot in the other direction towards the city.

I quite like it as it is... the foreground on the left of the photo (while interesting) does tend to tip the balance. Maybe a tighter crop on the left to exclude the green pylon would help.

Otherwise it looks to be a very good exposure.

I'm interested though... there seems to be some selective starbursting going on with some of the lights. Was this applied in PP, or did it just happen that way???

Jamie,

I like this photograph a lot. You are to be commended for stopping the lens down rather than opting for the usual "let's shoot wide open" treatment.

I disagree about the vantage pooint and the foreground content. Not every scene has to emulate a touristy picture postcard - in fact they become extremely tedious, incredibly quickly - this depicts a frequently photographed landmark complete and in context.

All too often we see photos that show what something is. This works well in meeting all the golden dictum of journalism:

    Who, What, When, Where & Why


You have also told us How.

With an eye on posterity, this is, to my way of thinking, a far more likely candidate for inclusion in a Museum, Library or Gallery archive as a window into the life of a bridge than just a simple uncluttered portrait.

I like it a lot.

......I like this image also as it gets away from the normal.......but would it be possible to see the same shot at just on dark with a little light in the sky, as I think this would add a great deal of depth to your pix.......

no not as yet, but I did do a beer crawl along the bottom end of Portobella Road watching the passing parade, very interesting. I am here till the 3rd of October, and this hotel is on the list, just waiting for the boy to return from the US on Monday........
