got this today with the 80-400@ 400 handheld.

Somehow seemed quite noisy for 400iso but washed it with noise ninja a tad.

comments welcome. particularly regarding noise.

I like the composition!

However the bird seems 'smooth' with not many feather details. Is it due to the noise reduction?

Well captured - I always seem to take one step too many when sneaking up on birds and the buggers fly off. (note to self - must get longer reaching glass!!)

I see what you mean about the noise.

I'm not familiar with noise ninja - what does it do?

Nikonuser: The lack of details on the feathers actually puzzles me although the light wasnt how you would want it for this sort of shot.

Meerka: Noise ninja is one of the many programs designed to reduce noise in digital images. The sort that may be generated with high iso exposures.
Not sure which program does the best job yet. currently under evaluation.

As far as sneaking up on the birds and having them fly away, that seems to happen to me also, way too often. This shot was unintentional in that I was crouching down attempting to photograph another bird when this one landed close enough for this shot.
