These and thousands of other houses will be under water when the Three Gorges Dam is complete in 2009. About 1.2 million people will be displaced.


6. Sideways
I like how the boat appears to be doing a broadslide.


7. Rice Terraces


8-11. Ghost City
The city of Fengdu (now known as the Ghost City) will be submerged by the flooding of the river. Residents are being relocated across the river. The Ghost City looks like a war zone similar to places like Beirut I've seen on TV. The locals are scavanging anything which can be sold, including the bricks.

great set of images, particularly the landscape photos. I've watched heaps of chinese 'martial art' movies and the landscape remind me of them.

your 5th image, reminded me of a movie i recently watched called "Balzac and the Chinese Seamstress'. i cant believe so much history will be under water.

Another excellent installment.

Photographically images 1,2 and 4 are the standouts for me. #7 I like the composition, but the colour looks too warm and too bright (was it REALLY that bright lime green?)

Shots 8-11 of Fendu are in a different league. As photos they don't work for me, but as images taken together they form a very strong narrative and I like them a lot because of that. They give an excellent feel for what that area must be like. I guess what I'm saying is these have an excellent PJ style feel.

China is the #1 place on my list of countries to visit when I get off my bum and go OS. Needless to say these shots make me jealous.

Do yourself a favour by hop on a plane to HKG and touring China in the near future, pass the cats to friends, give the key of your cellar to me and I'll look after it while you're away

No. It wasn't that green. I thought the graphic nature of the landscape might suit an over the top colour treatment but on reflection there is too much detail for it to work.

Excellent shots, you do a fantastic job of making the view feel like they are actually in the environment your shooting. Like stubbsy I think they later shots tell a very strong story.

Good to see some Aussie traditions at work there.....

ie. all standing around taking a geezer at something that catches your attention

Thanks for sharing, lot of interesting pictures here - I especially like the one with the boat. Regarding the ghost city shots, I second the comments that it has strong narrative... When did you take those photos? And did they tell you when the city is actually going to be flooded?

Wow - right time, place and good eye. took a similar trip not too long ago but nothing like what you saw. Liked your misty morning 3 - looked a lot like the classic Chinese paintings (maybe minus the phone tower). Thinking about a return trip already!! thanks for sharing.

What a great sampling of travel photos. The one of the boat is a real standout.

Cats - no problem. My fear is I'd come back to an empty cellar - let's see 1,000 bottles at an avereage price of $45 per bottle - makes for an expensive trip (and one GIANT hangover)

These are from our trip in July/August. The water level of the Yangtze is to rise by about 30-40 metres when the Three Gorges dam is finished and flodding is complete in 2009. The earthworks in the last shot is part of construction of an embankment which will still allow tourist boats to stop and visit Ming Mountain which has a temple on it.
