But wait - the 105 handles landscapes pretty darn well too!! Took the sunset this evening from the top of our street, and the waterfall at our local park this afternoon.

If you've been thinking of getting the 105, and have been putting it off, all I can say is don't... and welcome to the world of bugs

for about a month after I bought the nikkor 105 it was my walk around lens

I'm very happy with the results for macro and general landscape, but when imaging at true infinity, ie the stars etc, my Nikkor 105 is not in focus, it has a serious tilt in the focal plane. Comparison with my old 85mm shows how severe the error is.
Very disappointing for a Nikon lens

My old 55mm micro Nikkor gave excellent astrophotography performance.

I had a play with other Nikon 105mm and it had the same characteristic as you mentioned, especially at night or in the dark, I don't know any other members, who has the Nikkor 105 micro lens did a test on it or not.
Pls. don't get me wrong, perhaps it's the nature of the Nikkor 105 micro designed and built. I'll try another 105 when new stock arrive next week.
Other member, if you have the 105 micro, can you give me an idea of it.
