I am not 100% convinced this photo is sharp. I have done some post processing USM, but I think the image was blurry to begin with ... what do you guys think?

To me it looks sharp at first glance, but if you look at it for a bit longer to me it seems like it is a pretty average shot that is trying to be a good one by too much USM. It has been cropped slightly but not to get a 'digital zoom' (ie crop the centre of the photo).

:?:

Taken with my 20D, 100 Macro at the Kuranda Butterfly house. It was very overcast so very little light, and all handheld (forgot my monopod  )

Dion,

As best I can see you have suffered a tad from either camera- or subject-movement. Tracing the progression of focus along the antennae shows that the focus-point was pretty well spot-on.

That aside, does it matter? This is a cracker of a shot and the vivid leaf and muted tonings of the background lend it a welcome sophistication.

Could this lead to not only the fist Photo Of The Fortnight but also a first consecutive POTW?

Hi Dion
I would tend to agree that the shot is not 100% "tack-sharp", however it's a heck of a shot nonetheless.
Perhaps it is motion blur, as has been suggested....

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda is amazing ! My wife & I went their late last year when we visited Pt Douglas for a holiday. I can't remember the name of the bright blue-coloured butterflies, but they were simply beautiful. Apparently, they are attracted to the colour RED, which I happened to be wearing during our visit, and I had about a twenty butterflies all over me. :)

Great composition Dion, love the colors of the butterfly, leaf and the soft oof background. However you're right, the head and eye of the butterfly is oof and this is naturally where it should be the most sharpest imho.

Hi Dion great shot but to me it look's more like a missed focus but then again @ 1/125 f3.2 with 100mm lens it could well be blur ,when you guys coming up again

Yeah I think its lens blur. A bit shakey in my old age (28!) 8)

Oh well, I'll be back up there again so will try again.

Its a great place, would be awesome in the bright light. I'll have to remember the tip about red; I had a few on me as I was wearing light blue.
