Blue tongue

Here is a photo I took last week of a blue tongue lizard. It ran away straight after I took the shot so I couldn't get anything better.

It was ok, because I knew where it lived, so today I went looking for it, and sure enough it was there:

Since it wasn't out and about, I photographed some nearby water dragons. Here is one:

Later I quietly made my way back to see what the blue tongue was up to. Fortunately he was out and about, just outside his hidey hole:

Despite all the grass and sticks in the way, I was satisfied that I couldn't really get any better photos, so I went home.

Evil looking bugger! He certainly had his eye on you. First one is a beauty and the grass and sticks only add to it, in my view. These are taking ages to load, even on ADSL - might try to keep the files sizes down in future?

Doug #1 and #3 are both great with #1 being my pic for its clarity.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry if they were slow to download. I was afraid that smaller photos might lose detail. I'll post less photos per post in the future.

Doug, you should be able to drop them down to 100-150kb and they'll still look fine on monitors.

Thanks Simon, I'll do that in the future. :)

A friend of mine has a very interesting series of shots of the entire courtship and mating ritual of the Blue-tounge. He asked me to query here as to whether anyone knew of a good way to selling such an unusual scenario.

There may be laws against that.... :D

LOL! Yes, perhaps the clientele might be male blue tongue lizards?

Excellent shots there Doug

Blue tongues go ape over a bit of banana. You could tempt him into some interesting poses such as this one

I like your photo better than mine though

Cheers

Thanks Bob! :)

Graham, that's interesting. Your fellow is not afraid to come so close. The one I photographed was very skittish. You didn't peel the banana? :D I'll try the banana thing. I thought they would have only liked eating insects. Did you do something to the colour of your blue tongue there? Is it really that colour?

Hi Doug
This fellow lives at my parents house. Dad feeds the banana to him but I'd probably peel it although the skin does not seem to harm. They also like flowers as well and snails especially.
The red colour you see is the side of the mouth. If you look closely into the mouth you'll see a whisp of a blue tongue on the other side in his mouth.
They do become very tame and will hang around for a long time if fed regularly. Mind you they can inflict a painful bite so it is best to leave them alone unless you know exactly how to handle them.
They make great garden companions and if you keep the snail bait and cats away will live happily in gardens for many years.
You'll find they do become tamer as time passes especially if you feed them!
Cheers
Graham

Don't know how I missed this post, but well captured. I'd agree with popular opinion that #3 of the water dragon is excellent I'm also a fan of #1 and #2 of the blue tongue shots. With summer on the way these guys should only get more active and adventurous, this hopefully will make them easier to shoot.

Graham, I'll see if I can find the blue tongue today and throw a slice of banana to it, if it's there. I'll take my camera. :)

Thanks for your comment Jethro, I'm pleased you like it. I like the speckled colour of the rock in #3, It seems to go with the different colours on the water dragon. This dragon is particularly used to me. I have photographed it several times before and so it allows me to go quite close (within 2 metres).

Thanks for your comment BBJ. :)

Thanks Craig. Genista is happy you like #2 because it's her favourite photo. Nobody else has mentioned it, but Genista thinks it's the best. (Genista is my fiancee for those who don't know who I'm talking about. And the G in her name is pronounced as a J, for those who might be wondering.) :D
