I was passing the local florist this morning and thought I'd kill 2 birds with one stone...
1. Buy Mrs. Leek a nice bunch of tulips
2. Set myself an exercise with the tripod, SB-800 and 105mm lens

Here are some of the results... The first 2 are with the 105mm lens only and the last two are with the 105mm & a +4 closeup filter.

#2 is a little bit noisy due to the flash not fully reaching the subject - oh, how I need that extension cord...

I'd love to hear what you think... or what I could have done better... :lol:

Composition and detail are great, but...to extend that I would extra light up background to almost pure white. White and yellow it is a nice combination

Nice shots John, and a very wise strategy I admitted don't buy my wife flowers much, but I'm happier with the idea if I get to shoot them aswell.
I'd agree with Krystian that a whiter background would enchance these shots.

Nice photo’s John with a nice thought attached. I would go the opposite way and shoot the background to black :wink:

and the time after that she'd like you to do some jewellery shots!

Another great bunch of flower shots (boom-tish)

Looking at these and your dandelion posts almost makes me want to experiment with macro photography. These are beautifully rich in their detail. Personally I think a white background might be a little flat with these.

Oh yes... I never hide anything from her... She's psychic... It's just much easier to volunteer the information... :lol:

You have the tripod & flash - what's holding you back... A set of Hoya close-up filters to fit your 50mm lens would cost you $100 - You'd be amazed at the results you can get just with that...

I don't have any more room in my bag for new lenses + I'm still learning how to take landscape shots + I don't want to spend any more cash :wink:

A pack of 3 close up filters doesn't take up much more room than a box of matches... I'm sure you could fit that in... :-)
