Dragonfly in flight

Spent about 20mins today 'hunting' these guys out at Uni of Qld lake. Very hard to do. 20D and Canon 100mm macro. It was a real struggle with AF vs MF - AF is not fast on the 100mm macro (and the dragonfly doesn't present a good target for the AF to begin with), but trying to MF on these guys darting everywhere was equally hard.

Got about 3 decent shots; this is one of them.

Wow, to catch a dragonfly in flight that well is very impressive, I'd have enough trouble just trying to focus my own eyes on the tackers as they dart around let alone getting a pic of it

Great catch... Good background too makes him (or her?) really standout, but you planned that eh

good capture - would have made a funny site someone chasing these things around with a camera!

Good capture Dion... I know how difficult it is to catch these little blighters in flight coz I've tried it myself.
It would have been a better shot if it had been heading towards you, but I guess with these ones - you take what you can get...
Well done...

I know exactly how hard it is having tried myself to capture these little devils over the recent September holidays. You did extremely well Dion. Well done.

Incidentally , how far away is the subject from the camera plane ?

Nice shot Dion. I've been trying to get one of these for a while and still have had no success. :D
