Australia day is on a wednesday. The holiday in vic is on the actual day - is it different elsewhere? Cos that would be one big mo fo long weekend.

Greg B is right the whole country is celebrating Australia day on the day (Wed 26th) so no long weekend. Downright Un-Australian . Peter

I agree stubbsy, the Australian thing to do would be to always have Australia Day as a Monday and create a long weekend. No doubt about it. This having it on the actual day is nonsense.

Of course, in NSW (don't know about other states) in the building industry, they get an industry either side of any public holiday.
So for oz day they will have ... Weekend of Jan 22/23 off. Work on Monday Jan 24. Tues Jan 25 off - industry holiday. Wed Jan 26 off - public holiday. Thur Jan 27 off - industry holiday. Work on Fri Jan 28. Weekend of Jan 29/30 off. that's a 2 day weekend, one day of work, a three day mid-week break, one day of work, and a two day weekend. It's a tough life, eh? g.
