EOI Portraiture Shoot + Workshop 05.04.08

PostPosted: Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:45 pm
by Geoff
Hello all,

I'd like to get an EOI from members willing to attend a full day (or two half days, separate groups if interest is high enough) for a studio portraiture workshop.

I have a model who is after some prints to update her portfolio, mainly head shots but some full body as well. The style of these images will NOT be FHM etc.

I am looking into hiring a studio in the city which has a 7m x8m area and 3.5m ceiling. They supply a number of lights and backdrops.

This workshop/s would be limited to a max of around 8 people only, and a cost of around $50 would be involved for a full day or $25 for half a day.

I am looking at holding this in late April, early May but no date is set in concrete as yet.

If you are keen, please respond in this thread. When I have an idea of interest I will start discussing dates and people's availability etc.

Cheers.

Sounds interesting Geoff. 8 People is a lot, unless they take turns with the model, is there room for more then one setup (and then more then one model?)

Thanks for the feedback Craig. 8 is pushing the limits I thought, but if we reduced the number of participants it would increase the price per person, which I'm personally not opposed to. I am investigating to see if there's more room available. Will keep you posted.

Early to mid April .... or mid to late May, actually, because I'll be in the US from April 25 through May 12. :)

Hi guys,

I'm new here, but i'd be very interested too. I live in Canberra and start playing footy soon, so things might be a bit difficult for me, but i'd be very keen to work something out.

Thanks!

Hi Geoff,

I'm interested as I think it woudl be a good chance to catch up with some of the members. I am learning this stuff as well but as I have a studio setup if there are other members that would benefit more I am happy to miss out.

Otherwise if you need an assistant to setup, move lights help in general...

Cheers.

Ok...

I'm now thinking of an 8am til midday session and then a 1 to 5pm session (with a one hour break in between).
Cost would be $45 per person. ($45 for 4hours, groups of 5).
As Candice is an up coming model (and friend of mine) I am proposing that I bring a laptop with external hdd and get all the images (you can keep copies as well) from everyone's card at the end of each session. There will be a makeup and hair stylist attending as well.

Thoughts appreciated.

Keen to attend if it's early MAY (Away in April) and meet a few of you! Would it be a problem to bring a 350D... I don't think it has any way of connecting to fancy studio lights!?

do you own a flash? or all you would need is a wireless unit to trigger the strobes which the studio may have available or someone will have something to assist.

I have a 430EX and cheapo Ebay triggers... [very little experience]

I can make it on Sunday if there is any room left. Thanks!

The ebay triggers will work. Make sure that you bring a transmitter and a receiver.

Why "sadly"? That's all you need.

In a typical studio scenario, you just use the tranny on your camera, and the receiver plugs in to one of the lights. Any one of them.

Each of the lights (including the one you will have plugged in to) will have a built in optical trigger, so that whenever one of the lights in the studio gets triggered, the others will "see" that, and will also be triggered.

Let me know if there is any space left on Sunday and of the costs involved...

Organisationally, Geoff's the captain of this ship: he'll be confirming the date, times, names, numbers and costs involved over the next few days. And if the ship sinks, it's women, children, and Starks first, thank you very much.:)

My understanding for this one is that he may be asking for prepayment just to simplify matters on the day, so everyone's cooperation in that regard would be greatly appreciated.

Will the build in flash on my D80 do this triggering or do I need a transmitter and receiver too?

Yes, but we need to turn off the pre-flash. Otherwise, you'll trigger the heads from your pre-flash, rather than from the exposure flash.

Also, we generally turn the power of the on-camera flash way, way, way, way down for this.

Do you know how to do this on the D80? RTFM to be sure to be sure.

Ok...
I am going to check out the studio location (Homebush) hopefully some time this week.
The date of Saturday APril 5th is pretty much set in concrete.
We will have a morning session of 5 people, from 8am til midday, then an afternoon session from 1pm-5pm.
It will cost $45 per person.
Parking will be readily available.
Pre payment (via EFT) is the only payment option.

1.Gary (gstark)
2.Geoff
3.Glen
4.David (dviv)
5.Jeff (trotkiller)
6. Phoenix
7.Deadgoose
8. Andrew
9. Kyle (you're in now as Craig had to cancel).

I would like to get everyone's images on my external hdd at the end of each session, if you're not happy to part with them (of course you get to keep the images as well) then don't come :)

Please put your preference as to whether you'd like to attend the morning or afternoon session, also please be willing to swap to a morning/afternoon session if there is preference over one from the other, ok?

You're obviously not drinking quickly enough.

:)

Don't you feel sorry for those people who don't drink? When they get up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to be feeling all day. :)

If it's sunday I can do either session (happy to slot in where there is a space)

If it's saturday I need to find out whether I'll have a game in the morning or afternoon - will let you know asap.

The date is NOW set, and will be on SATURDAY 5th April, 2008.

I am very interested in coming to this. I am still waiting for a draw for my football club to come out, but from what i've seen we play on the Sunday so i should be fine. I'm coming from Canberra, so I'm guessing the afternoon session would be best for me, unless i can find a place to stay on the friday night.

I have a few questions though. I have basically zero experience with studio shooting. Is this the right thing to go to, or should i wait until i have some experience before i come to something like this? Am i going to get in the way of other people if i know very little about it?

If all of that is ok, what gear is needed? Obviously i have my D200 and lenses, but what else would i need?

If it's better for someone else to attend I'm happy to stand aside. If it's ok, then i really can't wait to be there!
