Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century American art. He was a true visionary and among the first to recognise the power of photography as an artistic and poetic medium, the epitome of a new way of seeing. A legendary figure who wanted to break with the past, Stieglitz was devoted to shaping a new cultural identity for America in a new century.

This is the first exhibition ever held in Australia of Stieglitz’s photographs and includes a rare selection of works gifted by his lover, muse and wife, artist Georgia O’Keeffe to the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Major loans are also coming from the J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York amongst others.

Thats a good date for me. I am also planning another sunrise for that weekend, so I may make it a day for photography :wink:

I was up around the northern beaches last weekend suring sunrise and there are lost a great beaches up there. Its a bit of a hike but early in the mornign the traffic rocks. So I was thinking about heading up tehre. I am locking that one in for myself so if your around (or anyone else for that matter) just msg me.

I did make it! was an hour late, sorry guys. Gary was the only one silly enough to wait around! (eitehr that or he was equally late)

MattK did you end up getting there on the saturday?

I really enjoyed the small amount of time I had to peruse the images, I personally would not like to spend too much time analysing them, the first impression of each image is what I really wanted.

As MattK mentioned, alot of these images are bloody small! they are also hung very low, every by normal person height imo, so the old back did alot of bending and the eyes alot of squinting. Now, I found lot of the sky-scapes (clouds) a bit bland and the artictic merit was lost on me, quite possible more my fault than then photographers! I did appreciate and like some of the city-scapes, in particular one which was had the roofs of the builds lit by moonlight with a few city lights included, anotehr was a winter scene with a cart(?) in the frame coming towards the viewer, it had lots of mood and really conveyed the conditions - this particular image was one that Alfred worked on for 5 years!

Some of the portraits are downright amazing, as gary will attest to, the self portrait is just incredible! its also an image that had 20 years (i am not sure abotu the exact years but it was ages) between capture and print?! I founf a particular portrait of O'keefe, of which there are many, reall rung my bell. All in all I really enjoyed the exibition, but wish they were larger sizes to be able to easily appreciate them!

Be sure to check it out if you have some time, you really only need to allocate max an hour to do it imo and for 10 bucks its good value imo.

I arrived at exactly 3PM and no one else was there. I took a slow second look at the exhibition and then checked out the rest of the gallery. I didn't see and forum members so went home. I enjoyed my time there and took a few pix of some of the art work.

Somewhat late, so my apologies to you, Matt, as well. I got there around 3:30.

But matted and placed in somewhat larger frames. Never before have so many 11x14 frames been pressed into use to try to make 4x5 images look bigger.

My impressions are pretty much the same as Gerry's. The images that I thought were good were truly great, but as with my own shooting, I thought that there less keepers than perhaps Mr Stieglitz did.

I think it may have been 23 years: shot in 1907, but not printed until 1930.

I also thought that some of the images appeared to have been made from fogged negatives. Matt, did you come away with that sort of a feeling?

I ended up getting back to Sydney at about 7pm on saturday...so there was no way i was going to make the exhibit. Sorry guys.
