Who plans on attending the Mini Meet this weekend at Birdy's???
I will bring along my Manfrotto MagFiber legs for members to have a look out (only opened the box yesterday).
If anyone plans to attend and also has the Markins M-10 ball head could you please bring it along so I can check one out before I decide on which head to buy.
Birdy has the Acratech ultimate ball head but not the Markins M-10.
Cheers,

Those legs are dead sexy Woody. Sorry, but I had a lil' peep and fondled them while they were passing by this way. Three sided tubes I presume for extra strength, a built in carry handle (which the Gitzo's don't offer) that also velcro converts into the weight hanger-offer in use, plus quick adjust leg angles, much easier and less fiddly than the other brand.

Woody,
What's the PM for?
If it was the case then no more meet at my base exist! cos I don't like the way it's (pretending it's true not fool) I use Maxwell as my tool of trade or same as "how people use lemon or lime" what's happenned to/after the last drop of juice?you imagine! They use their resellers or agent the same method, no difference.
I can sit together with those people either friends or foes but never paying my respects to them nor accepting any "favour" from them.
I provide the meets cos I love this forums, all my friends come along and I shared/ received with/ from them all the love, the friendships, the comraderies
The only thing make me nervous and discomfy about "The Betrayal" which I learned many times in my life and recently.

Yeah they are nice, I especially like the locks on the legs, they seem very easy to open and close.
I have not had a real good play with them yet (since I don't have a head) but I am sure it will get a work out at Birdy's tomorrow.
Looking forward to jumping on the tripod and head bandwagon

I can see the Man. legs you have is less value and quality than the G 1227 and equal to the Man. 550B but it's CF rather than AL.
I don't know if there's any heads will suitable, perhaps a funky Manfrotto head will do the job for it.
The real ball head and associated equipment will cost you two or three times of what you paid for the legs and it's not worth it to try on any ballhead.
I visited Vanbar and saw it for $525.00 but can get it down to $500.00 locally. Not worth to buy from O/S for AU$450.00.

Why can't you have a good ball head on these legs???
From what I have read the Acratech ultimate ball head would suit this tripod fine.
$450.00 from overseas is better than $500 from Australia, that's $50 still left in my pocket.

Yes, i can see your point of saving $50.00
Yes, any head will fit on any tripod but not only the head will hold the camera

Plus their price just went down in the last week. When I visited their store 2 weeks ago they had it listed as $565.00 (the 3 section version).

you have to be wise to think in shopping nowaday. That why you think in your head you get ripped off everywhere and try to find the new venue.
To save your $50.00 in your pocket like a gambling if something wrong with the leg and you have to ship it back to HKG for repair or replacement, is it worth?
I only buy stuff/ items overseas if I can save myself few hundred dollars or anything I can't find or source over here.
To work out the cost of shipping of the leg back to HKG with insurance at least cost you AU$100.00 one way by AP Airmail.
The difference of Gitzo tripod, to buy from HKG and Australia is varied from AU$500 - AU$600.00 and it's justified the saving.

You have to carefully read my post
What I mentioned was:
Not only the Ballhead will hold the camera, you
MUST need the L bracket or camera plate or lens plates to mount your D70 on the ballhead.
You're too simple in thinking of I'm discriminating people buying non VR lens or Manfrotto legs. I always welcome people have the Manfrotto as I said, everyone has difference choices and tastes.
You have to do more study and learn the concept of using tripod and head prior to invest your money into the systems which last you many years to come not buying today and discard it tomorrow, especially in your case you want to save your monies as small as $50.00 and don't want tp spend more. While on the other side you have to fork out $600.00 - $700.00 to acquire a ballhead and minimum of parts to work with your D70.
Your tripod will be fine in mounting the D70, no doubt! with the head! OK no doubt!

I thought you meant that the head and legs hold the camera... Sorry misunderstanding.

Yep, that is what I plan to do tomorrow at your place. One of my questions tomorrow was going to be do I just need to buy the head and plate or are there other things i
need?

You don't need to ask tomorrow, I can tell you now:
you'll need the ballhead and the L plates for the camera or the Head with the camera plate only.
Check on RRS, Acratech, Kirk, Markins site, all informations and pricing are there.
If you only have the D70, just go get some funky Manfrotto heads with Manfrotto QRP instead of going down to the winding road same I & other have, and it's cheaper, suitable with the tripod you have in both economical and flexibility ways.

This is what I was planning to get. The L plates did look useful but I thought this is something I can get later on if required.

Looking on Vanbar's site a Manfrotto head which at least look's similar to the markins etc... are still over $400 (Manfrotto 468RC4 Pro ball head)
So I guess what I need to research is if the Markins or Acratech is a much better head (as they are not much more expensive).

It's still far cheaper than the other way and it's matching with your "consumer" grade tripod (It's similar with the Feisol 3401 or 3402)
The other way will cost you minimum at AU$500.00 with the head and the plate (Not the L bracket).

The Acratech would be $365.00 AUD delivered. Wouldn't this be a better deal/head than the manfrotto???
The markins M10 would be $440.00AUD delivered, I am not sure if this comes with the plate or not though, waitign on an e-mail from Markins as someother people have reported the plate is included in the 2005
model.

This is the base

I think Birddog mean quick release clamp...
almost all heads come with a clamp... you then need to get an acraswiss plate, weather it is a simple one or an L-plate
Basically:
CAMERA
++++
Plate
++++
Clamp
++++
Head
++++
Legs

QRP = Quick Released Plate is on the ballhead but someome may call it as Quick Released Clamp also on the ballhead with the dovetail.
On the other words, people may call lens plate, lens foot, camera plate etc...

OK so let's see if I have this right...
So far I have bought the legs so now I need to buy a head
plus a plate.
The head will cost me about $400 and the plate will cost me about $60.00 (this is if I go Markins or Acratech.)
OR
I can buy a manfrotto head and plate combo for about $440.00
Is this correct?
Sorry if I sound dumb, maybe I am

Woody,
Legs & Heads, we're going around the circle and circle and never ending, you know that we have so many threads in the past regarding these stuffs, you may review and do more research on those same as many posted sites, you can imagine out which is which and how can it works, they're so simple.
Hope you can find your answer.

A simple yes or no would have been enough....
Obviously I am not getting something in regards to the setup of tripod heads. I HAVE read the threads (as I have sadi before).
Forget it, don't worry about it I will work it out myself or through a retail shop.

Mini meet report for Onyx (and a way of rescuing the thread)
Roll Call : Leek, Wile_E, MattK, Coolhand, SIRHC55, Glen, Huyhnie, Sheepy + Little Sheepy (who's not all that small
)
Chris returned us all to Sesame Street by demonstrating the good Greek letter Sigma - not bad lenses either - but was upstaged by Birddog's late purchase of the Nikkor NOCT (another good Greek word) to the expressed envy and lens lust of all present.
See, Onyx, you are not the only one with opportunities to look and be amazed by the wonders that emanate from the Nikon factory of dreams
I'll stop now before getting too carried away - how many more weeks before we expect to see you back at Belmore, Onyx ??
