I had both and the 24-70 is a real monster with a 82mm filter.

The 70-200mm is I belive on par with with a nikkor ed (Yes I am going to be flamed here) I still have it. Until I REALLY require a VR for some reason. I do not see a need for it in my armoury

24-70mm - my sample was not the best I hope yours is better. If anyone wants one for free there is one in Lane Cove River park - "under" the boat shed.

For most things colour and sharpness stopped down 2 stops was great but the distortion was a killer at the short end 24mm ie building at the edge was slanted severely.

I have the 70-200 too and it the optical equal of both the Nikkor 80-200 and 70=200 VR. I've said it many times and I stand by it. If you got a good copy you'll be very pleased.

The 24-70/2.8 is also a very fine lens, at least mine was, but I prefer the EX 24-60. It's sharper wide open and a bit better throughout the range than either the 24-70 or the 28-70. Still the 24-70 will serve you well I think especially on the longer end where it really excels.
