Hello All

My dear but completely misguided (being a happy Nikon D70 owner, I have to say that!) son-in-law has decided to buy a Canon 350D. No amount of argument or reason can persuade him otherwise.

If anyone knows of a reputable retailer with keen prices, I'd be grateful for a tip or two.

I just bought my 350D last week. I love it.

My retailer showed me the Canon Factory price list. His buy price was $1496.00 Inc GST. I picked mine up from him for $1596.00 (Australian Stock).

This was from Nth Sydney.

I found the standard price out there was $1695.00, With the idiots at Hardly Normal wanting $1795.00 ( yeah right, even with 24 months interest free, no deposit ), although I got HD down to $1680.00 when I told them the going rate in photographic shops is $1695.00.

P.S. I'm a son-in-law also. You should follow the kid, he's smart fella.

I would of probably been more tempted to have gone a Canon (especially the 350D seeing as it's 8mb?) if it wasn't for the real plastic bodies. I know the D70 isn't metal but it's the same material used on the F80/N80 and it's very robust. I've already dropped my camera a meter onto concrete in a carpark and it survived with only minor grazing.

Ouch! Good to see your D70 sustained no real damage there Kipper! *phew* I'd have slow motion nightmares for ages watching my camera falling if it were to happen.

Just tell him not to be clumsy with it.

That tends to be the standard rule with Nikons and Canons (except of course the extremely high end Canons):

Drop a Nikon, it'll survive.
Drop a Canon, you'll be crying.

Ok, yeah, I made that horrible rhyme up, but the logic has been there for ages in different forms.

I just wanted to say that I ended up purchasing the Canon EOS 350D and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for the feedback to Bago's post on mybehalf.
