D70 Triggering ?

D70 Triggering ?

Postby Alpha_7 on Tue Jun 06, 2006 5:51 pm

After seeing Firsty's mouse trigger I was wondering does the D70 have functionality where I can connect it to an electronic circuit to control it's shutter release ? I was hoping to rig up a sound and / or light sensor that would trigger the D70 for some studio action photography ? Can it be done, has anyone on these forum done something similar ? How did it go ?

Craig, I believe the D70 doesn't have a cable release port like the D70s does.. So the only option might be the IR remotes?

I believe the d70s added this feature but the humble d70 only has the ml-l3 or clone infrared jobber.

I have seen people use light pipes, foil etc to get them to work from behind.

I also did some brutality with a plastic lid which was the same size as the on/off switch so that I got a reasonable interference fit and screwed a conventional cable releasei into the top that, so that it would press down on the shutter button when I used the cable realease.
I also put a rubber band around it to help it stay there.

It worked but was hardly elegant.

ml-l3 or clone will be your only real choices.

my teacher at school has done this outdoors during the dark. he had set the 300d to fire long exp then
he connected a sound tigger to a flash and when someone had kicked a ball the flash went off.

Looks like I need to upgrade my camera ;-)

Hmmm, I guess the other option is I trigger the flash and keep the shutter open longer... hmm not sure if the affect I'm looking for can be achieved that way...

If you get away with it, be sure to share the secret with us ;)

I go through my days alternately thinking "there's no way I need more than a D70s" and "gee the D200 looks good" to "hmmm.. the D2X is also very very nice (damn you Stubbsy)"

Just modify the ML-L3 to stick a long optical cable to the IR sensor on the D70 and there you go :)

craig, just read your reasons again.

I made a sound trigger years ago for high speed work.
probably still works.

depending on the speed of the event you are after, perhaps you can trigger the camera in bulb or longish exposure and fire the flash manually by hand.

If you get really stuck I couild dig out the old sound trigger and see if it still works and if so you could borrow it.

Thanks Steve, I actually have the plans for a sound trigger just never got around to building it, for what I had in mind I wasn't sure sound triggering would be affective, so I was going for a laser / sensor that when interupted triggers the flash / camera.

Perhaps it's worth testing the sound trigger first :)

Sounds like fun in making a sound trigger, :D

Maybe a visit into Jaycar can answer this question pretty well...

I'm sure we talked about this before.
Redline raised this question and we could not give him any solution due to it's a D70.
But other cam (D100/ 200/D2/ F5/ F4/ F100/ F90) can be used or have other third party to work with its wireless remote or VOX.

I've done this to my remote. Quite easy if you're even half competent with a soldering iron.
Basically it lets you trigger the camera via the remote using any external trigger.

I built a little circuit which triggers the remote at regular intervals to allow simple time lapse photography.

I've also got a circuit ready to go for a infra red beam trigger to trigger either a flash or the ml-l3. It allows instantenous or delayed triggering.
