Experienced CCD Cleaner In Melbourne Wanted

G'day all,

Once again there's a number of dust bunnies on my CCD. While it may sound obvious, I was wondering if there was anyone in Melbourne who is considerably experienced in cleaning their CCDs and wouldn't mind showing me how it's done.

I've been thinking about getting a cleaning kit from Camera Clinic and giving it a try as there's something about paying $99 for a clean everytime which just doesn't sit well with me. Their cleaning kit is also $99 which will apparently give me 12 cleans.

Bear in mind I don't know the first thing about cleaning the CCD including what sort of tool/equipment is required.

Ray, I am in Sydney so cant help, but get the Giotto Rocket from Birddy, less than $20 and will replace wet cleans 5 out of 6 times. Try the D70 gear email, I think there may be stock in Melbourne. Good luck

A good blower is a must and you should get one, even if you don't carry a wet cleaning kit around with you.

I'm busy the next few days but could show you what's involved on this coming weekend (see the Melbourne forum for discussion of a possible meet). We can give your camera a thorough clean (dry & wet if required) then. Do you have a D70 or something else?

Get the Pec-pads and Eclipse fluid from Birdy. Enough for 5 years of cleaning for around 60 bucks. Follow the directions posted previously or get a Melbourne member to show you how. Do not be afraid...it really is a simple procedure.

Cheers, thanks Matt.

I was thinking of just getting the kit from Camera Clinic first.

think it comes with all the kit to get me started.

I would like to have it done by this weekend if possible as I've just received a phone call telling me that my 80-200mm f2.8 is ready to be picked up.

Keen to get out to give it a go.

It sounds like the cleaning kit would be a pack of Sensor Swabs (12 swabs in the kit).
These are tiny swabs of PecPad material folded around the end of applicators, with Eclipse solution applied and then sealed in individual wrappers (Eclipse, PecPad, and SensorSwabs are all made by the same company). Unless they've changed the design in the past year or so, the swab doesn't provide an even pressure when wiping the sensor, and I've found I get better results having spent less money on PecPads and Eclipse separately (with a spatula as described on the copperhill site).

Another site to check is http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/.

Ray,

John is absolutely right about the copperhillimages website. It's so easy after you read all the info and try it once. I got my swab there and pec-pads plus loads of useful advice. I've only done wet clean once and haven't yet had the need to do it since (several months now). I can provide you with free methanol for cleaning (same as eclipse).

Cheers
Alex

From the sounds of it, the copperhillimages site is where it's at to get cleaning stuff.

I'll probably order stuff from them unless someone knows where I can get similar stuff locally. As I mentioned before, I'd like to get it done as soon as possible as it looks like I'll be getting a couple of my lenses back from the shop soon.

You can also get the copper hill kit from Quality camera's website the whole cleaning kids. They are based in WA and you can get the stuff shipped immediately. Somone posted their website in the Trader opinion section a couple of weeks back...

Thanks Alex,

I've just ordered a kit from them.

Makes it easier when they're in Australia too.
