I went to Sydney motor show on last Friday, the lighting is not very good for taking picture, too many spot lights, plus a lot of high power mercury vapor lamp on top, and lights drop off sharply on to car shiny surface, any advices what metering mode should I use, using flash seem add more reflect light from the car surface , should I use filter, and what type of filter if need one.

Shoot in Raw.
Metering mode I tend to use centred and manual mode. Bump the ISO if you have to.

I hated motorshow!
Shooting motorshow is one of a hard part to do: people around and in front of your lens, quite annoying.

Manual mode, center as Pirostich mentioned, WA & fast lens as 20/2.8, 28/1.4 + bounced flash with diffuser.

Wide angle lens, low angle, shoot raw, and just tell those people to get the hell out of your way! Snarl and look mean.

Really mean.

always ask the hot model for a free pose, maybe all that gear will inpress her. last time she was inpress by the fact i was still shooting with a film body

Yes I agree, Motor shows are for the merchandiese (HD clothing in this case)...



To be honest I only used flash on the models, for cars I used "ambient" and ISO800 with my fast lenses.

Thank everybody for advices, next time I know what to do in a similar situation.
Just had a email about test drive the new Peugeot, may be end of the show.

These girls seem to have two things in common

I'm looking forward to our next car show in Brissy.
I struggled with the last one up here for the same lighting problems and had at that stage only used the D70 for about three days.

I'm going to try using the Sb600 with a small diffuser off to the side facing along the panels to light up the paint a little better and cause less bounced back highlights.

And, this time I'll get more time with the Harley girls. They're usually bolstered by "Flirt Models" who are real camera floozies and lots of fun (cause they have to be)

I was using centered weight metering and slightly underexposed the
images. I was quite lucky as early in the morning the crowds hadn't arrived.
The only area where I couldn't get a shot was at the prestige Maybach.

Same here - I had only had the 20D for a little while and was still getting used to it. Next motor show I will be armed with 20D, 70-200 2.8 (the above was shot with 100 2.8 Macro) and 580EX

Back when I was still stupidly shooting using jpg. Taken with a kit lens + SB800.

Not exactly a thrilling pic...

What fun would a car show be if it wasn't for the demo dollies!

How about doing it in the back of a demo car...w/out being caught There's a challenge for ya (no i'm not speaking from experience)

Sneak in before the show open via the back doors or stay back late with the girl on show!.

Great ideas! Lot of nice dollies there. They're free to look but not to touch, huh?

If you want to have a car to yourself, all you need is a chunky-serious-looking walkie talkie. These things can be as good as a police badge when telling people what to do.

I'm going to have to push for a media pass through work to get in the day before the crowds this year. I'll miss out on the dollies but there'll be better car shots produced.

Last time I tried to go and take car show pics I spent most of the time waiting for rude people to stop walking in front of the shot. This time since I will be taking the flash on a tripod seperate to the camera I'll likely be more noticible and will also be more pushy to get people out of the way.

I went to the the show on the opening day to catch the spirit of the first day, a lot of people , I waited near 30 mins for the Honda Integra but all the time people and people never stop, so I gave up, I shot the car and people , but on the first day everybody still energertic and very active, that why I went to the show on the first day.

Brisbane shows dont seem to get quiet days.
And I will have to make reallly sure that when I do eventually buy my 206GTi180 that it isnt preused now. eeek.

I'd try to go on the media preview day for uninterrupted shots of the vehicles and a show day where I can capture the performances and girls as well

Last year at the Sydney show - two blokes had an Audi A6 all to themselves for about 10 minutes after they'd somehow managed to lock themselves in and couldn't get out!

The Audi staff were quite frantically trying to find the keys, but weren't having much luck

Give the model a business card or your contact details and offer them a copy of the photo even if you just email them.

It is amazing what turns up if you are kind to models

Be polite and don't expect anything in return but it can be a great way of making contact with models.
