Why is a round lens used when rectangular pictures are required?

Same reason your eye isn't rectangle I suppose.

Corners would deform the light, round lenses focus it.

Also, if your eye was rectangle it would irritate you.

:)

Heres a harder question, where does the 'white' go when the snow melts?

Well, of course there were many early cameras - not least of which the Voigtländer Petzval and the original Box Brownie of George Eastman - which took round pictures. A bit like square pictures without the corners I guess.

Cheers,

Serious answer: Because round lenses are a lot easier (cheaper) to make. Rectangular lenses are made by cutting a rectangle out of a round one (there are exceptions, such as some moulded lenses)

Or would that be 4:3, or nowadays 16:9 eyes?
