Compatibiliy of 70-210 with Nikon DSLRs?

I've been searching for an affordable second lens to use with my D70s and have read a lot on these forums about the 70-300 G and D types lenses. I've got to say I'm not that impressed by a) the slow focusing, b) plastic construction or c) soft images that members have described.

I've been looking on Ebay and in newspapers for a 70-210 f4-5.6, which I understand is quality stuff. However, some people have said I might not be able to use all the functions of the D70s with this lens.

My questions are: which functions will I miss out on? Is it all 70-210 lenses or just the older ones? How can I tell the various lens models apart?

Great lens, works fine, off the top of my head cant think of any functions it misses out on except if it is not a D model (it usually comes after the model number) that affects flash metering slighly. The D models (newer) are said to focus slightly faster.

Basicly anything with AF in front of it will let you use all the functions and with 'D' on the end will also send back 'distance' info to the camera. Supposedly the AF 70-210 4.5D was the 'creme de la creme' of these lenses. Check out Ken Rockwells site (http://www.kenrockwell.com) for more info.

I have one of these that is pre "D" series and it works on the D2x. It is still slow to focus compared to a more expensive but does have quality optics.

There were several versions of this lens and as moggy has noted look at Ken Rockwell's site, I'm pretty sure he distinguishes between the versions.
