Alas poor Glass Eye... Photoshop predating CS and CS2 (which are actually versions 8 and 9) requires a program like Nikon Capture / View to be installed or whatever main RAW editor that came with your camera.

Also, when you import a file into Photoshop 7 (or 6... it's pretty much like 7 in the way it handles RAW files), you have a limited option of what you can do with the files.

I'd look into acquiring a copy of Photoshop CS or CS2, honestly.

Photoshop 1-7 are not made for the editing of RAW images nor for the conversion.

Thatd be because as far as i know.. (and that aint much..) PS 7 cant handle NEF files... only help i can give is maybe suggesting visiting the Adobe website and looking for a raw convertor for PS 7.. or Get PS CS or CS2

Thanks for the response guys;

When i open up a RAW file it shows up grey and says 16.7 %.

I guess this just does not support RAW.

How massive is the programme though what is the best way to get trained up on it?the courses are $$$$$$$ expensive and so are the dvd,s.i guess just read read read about it.

Regards John

Planned obsolescence - Adobe is evil making you have to upgrade.

Rawshooter Essentials by Pixmantic supports NEF conversion, and it's free. You can process the NEFs in RSE, import them to PS7 and do your editing there.

You just need a bit of practice.

Glass eye,

I use PS7, with a Plug-in for NEF files, works good for me though soon will upgrade to CS. I am sure I still have the plug in some where, if you would like a copy (it was a "freebie") PM me with your addy and I will find it and send it over.

:) Cheers Andyt

...........p.s. Don't give up! would recommend you attend a workshop or two for some one on one instruction. Once you get the the hang of it you teach your self. Some excellant tutorials and "how to" guides available on the web. I know the this costs money, but consider your existing investment in gear, only this time invest in yourself! :P .............

Thanks Andnt,

Is my e mail sufficient for the plug in or would you send it in the mail?

That is most generous of you.

I think the biggest hurdle with it all is understanding layers and being able to manipulate them.A month down the track and im still lost but have bought a manual and am reading it.

Cheers John

If you want to play it cheap but still get top notch results, there's life beyond Adobe. I use Bibble for RAW conversion and everything I'd classify as post-processing. For subsequent photo editing I use the brilliant GIMP.

Bibble is $70 or $130 US, for the lite and pro versions, respectively. It can be tried for 30 days without license. The GIMP is GNU software. Nuff said.

Both run on Linux, OS X and Windows.

Cheers
Steffen.

Matt,

Not pirated, got the plugin from a website posted on the forum, can't find the web address, but was a free "trial version", maybe 12 months ago?... many members at the time also took the opportunity...... :P
