Time for my weekly dumb question....

Recently my D70 has been swapping in and out of naming files DSCxxxx.nef and _DSCxxxx.nef It's been doing it for a while now.. and it makes things very confusing any ideas why it would do this ?

Are you changing from M,A,S,P modes to the vari-program preset modes? (e.g. Auto, Sports, Portrait, etc.)? I believe this will result in a change of file naming protocol and also your shots will all be in sRGB colour space despite what you may have programmed in your menu (e.g. Adobe sRGB)

Hmmm...
That would make some sense as Kate often uses Auto mode, while I shoot nearly exclusively in M, S and A. Simon, is there any way around this ?? And I don't recall it happening till recently. (Perhaps after my firmware upgrade... ?

I don't think there is any way around it Craig.

There is no way around this situation as all programme modes shoot sRGB (file extension without underscore). In the M, A, and S mode you can set the colour space you require. The underscore before the file extension indicates AdobeRGB.

I started using the date_time_suffix format for renaming when downloading files after I "clocked" the counter the first time. The reason was to avoid duplication of filenames on my system. I use Nikon Acquire for downloading all images. It also keeps things in a nice chronological order.

Cheers

Just did a quick experiment...

- In manual mode, set color space to Argb (mode II) take shot = "_" as first char
- Change to Auto thing (green thing, never used it before), take shot comes out as D...
- Change back to manual, take shot, came out as _ as first char (Argb?)

Seems to go back to what I had it set as when going from manual, to green auto thing, then back again...

A D2x or a D200 ?

I think I'll put up with it.. it must be (because recently I changed to shooting Argb rather then srgb) as it never happened before.

There are a couple of ways around it. Either:

1. Use sRGB for everything.
OR
2. Ban Kate from using the vari-program modes, only P, A, S and M (P is a good place to start).
OR if you really don't like 1 or 2:
3. Batch rename your files when transferring them to your PC (using Nikon Transfer, or once they're in a folder).

I choose 2, and without wanting to re-open the colour spaces debate, 1 as well. ;)

He must be talking about the D2X as according to my pdf copy of the D200 manual it does the same underscore thingy

I concur with Trent. Unless there is a compelling reason why you're specifically selecting to shoot in aRGB, use sRGB.
