Can someone please tell me what size CPL i would need for this lens as i am thinking of getting it soon?. I have read that it may need a thinner filter than usual as it can vinnegete(spelling?) at 12 ish.Could you also tell me where i might be able to get the filter and what make and model others have used with success. Many thanks in advance Stephen

77mm, standard Hoya CPL will work with Nikkor 12-24, not required the thin 3mm filter.
Sorry, I have no stock of CPL.

Thanks BIrdy ,are you saying that the standard 5 mm will not vignette???,If so that will save me buying the ultra at 3mm and probably twice the price

The 5mm CPL is quite good on Nikkor 12-24Dx at 12mm.
The 3mm CPL is three to four time of the cost of the standard 5mm.

I have this lens and the standard CPL filter. Here's an example at 12mm. Enhanced, but uncropped - there is a slight amount of vignetting in the corners, but you have to look close! (to see it larger, click the image). For me the extra $ for the thin filter isn't justified. Note that the darkness in top left is the effect of the polariser rather than vignetting.

I take your point and it's always a dilemma for me Chris. The clouds make this shot for me yet they are more striking because of the CPL. Downside is there's that grubby dark bottom right corner and matching top left corner.

A CP on an UWA lens for reflections I can understand, but surely the above effect (which BTW I think is stunning Peter, love this pic) is far better done in PP than with a filter?

It's a matter of choice and comfort zone I guess. For me, if I can get the picture looking the way I want without much PP, the better, but that's just me and others I'm sure prefer to do the PP. So I'll tend to use the CPL when I think it will be appropriate.

I choose to have a CPL on when needed, rather than playing with PP.

I can't really comment on what CPL but I thought I'd just brag and say I GOT ONE TOO, today Thank you Birddog and I'm keen to attach a CPL first chance I get. Do we have a 12-24 DX club on this forum

Chris you raise an interesting point with that comment The use of a CPL on a WA lens quite often causes this "graduated polarisation" effect. Sometimes it is desirable and improves the image, sometimes it is not and spoils an otherwise nice shot.

IMHO in this case (to my eyes) I think it helps Peter's image. Peter of course had the luxury of taking 2 photos, one with the filter and one without and choosing his preferred image later.

A luxury that the manufacturer of one particular brand of 12-24 do not afford their customers......

Fair enough André, and a good point: a simple and fast workflow is almost always better. As you say, what 'simple' and 'fast' mean I guess is an exercise for the reader.

SOrry to cut in on this thread but it pertains to the 12-24DX just got mine today and all I've managed to do is place a UV filter on front and try it on my camera. Is it normal for the lens to be that tight a fit on the D70? It seems really stiff but gets on compared to my other nikon lenses eg my 80-200 goes on really easy(mind you it's about 2 years old) and has a little play in it once fitted while the 12-24DX grips the D70 lens mount like an arm wrestler
