I've been using RawShooter Essentials for the past couple of months, mainly because it's tailored to my budget It does everything I need in terms of quickly viewing and assessing images and deciding which are worth sending to PS for some tweaking (I'm still very much at the steep end of the learning curve here).

The other day my wife was playing around with RSE (I've been trying to encourage her interest in photography) when the laptop crashed. After re-booting it, she tried opening RSE with no luck.

I've removed the program (going through Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Remove Automatically) and re-loaded, but still can't get it to open.

Can anyone shed some light on what's happening here? Has anybody else had any similar issues with RSE? My computing skills are average at best - please keep your answers in plain English.

I had a similar problem when I had a power outage while using RSE.

Unfortunately I could not resolve it. Did the remove/reinstall which didn't work. Plowed through the registry and removed every RSE entry that I could find. That didn't work either. Went back to a restore point well before the outage and reinstalled, but that didn't work either.

I gave up after that, it had taken up too much time, so I downloaded & bought the full version which is great, by the way, and well worth it.

I would also like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and overcome it

go start menu choose 'run' then type 'cmd'
the dos prompt window appears copy and paste the text from the 'download file link'

press enter

restart raw shooter

i also noticed one thign with Raw shooter essentials
it reads RAw files differently and it's interpolation of raw imagesis not as smooth as say Nikon Capture but nikon capture is slow and hard to use
the beauty of RAw shooter is it works in real time like zoom, colour balalnce exposure comp etc

e.g if i take a pictrure at high ISO like 800 then convert it into a tiff using RAW shooter the noise ratio is much higher on the exported image on close inspection the pixel renderign looks squarish and jagged harsh

If you use a Capture the output image looks just the way the camera took it, the end result is smoother

I thought it had something to do with the noise supression values in Raw shooter but fiddlign with those sliders don't do anything so i'm thinking because of this output image quality issue it's distributed for free

So Wendell .... how do RSE and NC compare to Camera Raw within PS? I've got them all but only ever use Camera Raw. I just found it the easiest to use but maybe I need to adjust my thinking.

I know Nikon Capure has a similar interface but it doesn't preview in real time and i would say it's slow

another bad thing abour RSE is it has no undo so if you tweak color balance and you need to go back you need to quit out of program to loose the changes, or destroy the raw settings folder in the image directory to get rid of the settings

depends on your workflow I woudl say RSE is slimlined and you can copy settings from other images and paste them onto multiple images
but the export image quality ain't great

Thanks Wendell. Camera Raw has a neat little "Reset" action that makes all the bad things go away...!

RSE has a similar feature. It has a reset/restore icon. The reset icon will reset all changes back to the original "as shot" values. Th restore icon will restore all changes you have made.

Another way to look at a before/after of the image you're working on is to use the snaphot function (which is what I do). This produces a second image that you can play around with, while leaving your original image untouched. You can switch between the 2 at will. In fact, you can make as many snapshots as you like.
