I was having fun with a borrowed extra SB800 last weekend.

Tried a shot with D70 Commander TTL to the SB800.

Both on Channel 3, group A. But only one fired??

Ghostly bad, but certainly a fun self-mugshot

Maybe you were covering the sensor on one?

Yep, they should both fire at the same level as a pair (unless one didn't see the D70).

If you want to have more control and output a different amount of light from each flash you should set the D70 to manual flash mode - previously I used 1/16 and a business card to block the inbuilt flash from the subject. Set the SB-800's to SU-4 mode and manually set their light output. This give you a lot of options, even if it is a bit more tedious.
