I havent used the Tamron, but I have the Sigma 70-300 here.

The Sigma is clearly a value winner in terms of quality vs price.

Neil,

Of those, I'd be inclined to get the Tamron.

Not sure of the Tamron, but the Sigma has the macro function which can be quite useful.

Having owned the Sigma for 12mths, I am now looking to the Nikkor 80-200mm, which is around $1100 ex HK. Big biccies I know, but I could have saved $300-odd by buying right the first time.

comments:

pics are sharp, a bit noisy on the lens in autofocus... i suggest to switch in manual when doing macro. good lens for $200...am happy with it. thanks for viewing....

Thanks for the test shots, I hope you are happy with your investment, I can't seem to fault it for the price it looks sharper them the 70-300G, plus it has macro feature.

Hello there, Diver_Neil. Thanks for showing the pictures you took with your Sigma 70 - 300... POA lens. After seeing you photos and comparing them with what I got last Sunday with my Canon 55-200mm f4.5-5.6 II USM lens I took it back to the shop I bought it from and traded it in for one like yours. I haven't got it yet because they gave me the non POA version, by mistake, so I took it back the following day and they ordered in the one I wanted. So I am waiting with anticipation... Please tell me you are happy with yours...? :D :D :D :D

I've used both and find them to be pretty good 70-200 macros, with both being a bit soft between 200mm and 300mm. I'd give the edge to the Tamron though I am a particular fan of Sigma, especially the EX series lenses.

I'm looking at these lenses too, why do you say the tamron has the edge cameraguy ?
