Hi All,

I am hoping to get the chance to do some Pano shots while on the Gold Coast next week but was wonderiing what are the rules in Pano photography???

Are there recommended Apertures?

Is it logical to say leave the camera in Maual and then don't change any settings until your finished the shot?

Should you set the tripod up in the middle of the Pano (so to speak) and then restrict any up and down movement and just pan horizontily?

If its a night pano of landscape how about night landscape with the camera tilted to ortrait????

Good idea to shoot in manual mode once you've worked out a good exposure. That will ensure you get an even sky. Make sure the images overlap by a fair amount. PS will be able to stitch them together better. Good luck!

By Portrait mode Birddog mean with the camera rotated 90 degrees...

What is the reasoning behind that? If you have a larg area to cover wouldn't that mean you need to take a lot more images?

Woody,
The head with index scale as you have seen many times at the meet,
the index scale is at the base of the head to help you to keep track of your swing of the camera in pano mode and shooting pano is always recommended in portrait mode, it means the the camera stand up right on its side instead of staying flat in landscape mode

Ahh ok, yeah I have seen these at the meets. Have not really looked at tripods that closely at the meets as I am in no position to buy one so thought better than get captured by the tri lust

Hahaha! just special for you and I know you're looking a good/ nice restaurant at the Gold Coast but forgot that McDonnald and Kentucky Fried Chicken has been banned in the area so your two kids are not going to enjoy like mum and dad

The night we go out for dinner (Friday night) the boy will stay at the resort in the child minding

The girl will come with us but we will make sure she has had some whiskey so she sleeps well

I think we will go to that seafood place that was mentioned on the other thread (sorry forget name and who posted but plan to look it up after this post).

took a while but now i can see why you would shoot in portrait mode.

taking me longer though to figure out the benefit of having the index on the rotating head. is there significant advantage in having uniform angles between pictures? does this help the stitching software?

The real pano head always comes with index scale and sliding rail, It helps alot when you stich them together and saving your time in correction the angle of several shots.

It should probably be noted that while it certainly helps to have all sorts of kit when taking a panorama, all you really need is a camera and something to photo..

That panorama was a 6 or 7 shot ( verticals ) handheld pano taken about 3 weeks after I got my D70 IIRC. The shot was I believe taken in either full-auto or possibly landscape programmed mode which I guess makes it more of a testament to the quality of the camera rather than the photog.

If you can, use manual settings, definately don't change white balance between shots, take a few rounds of shots and don't forget to take a moment and actually look at what you're photographing.. my only regret with regards to that shot is that I don't recall actually looking out at that shot with my own eyes, only through a lens...

What I am not sure of is when you setup for the pano do you basically stay in the same spot while you shot all the images or do you move to the left or right?

I would have thought if you stayed in the same spot you would get some sort of, I don't know, warping at the edges or something??? (don't you love my technical terms)

Talking in theory, you can do whatever you want and happy with what you got.
Technically, all are differently in the way you're guessing.
Just try yourself and you'll learn more at the end, or cancel the trip and come for the workshop.

The image is of the closest of the three sisters and jamison valley in the blue mountains in NSW..

Be gentle with me - this is my first image post.

I took this last week, the day after I got my D70. So I was just playing around. Normally I'd follow birddog's advice and shoot it as a series of portraits, but this is in landscape (4 shots with about 30% overlap). Also (shock, horror) I used the preset Landscape Mode of the D70. I would always recommend using manual settings if you're fair dinkum.

I think it turned out OK, all things considered. Give me your worst.

Looks like a nice stitch to me.

My 'improvement comment' is that i would have liked to see some foreground interest. Say one of those fence pilings up close (although I'm not sure how this works in a pano.

I think the rustic feel of the shot is great and the subject matter in pano is a great choice as well.
