For that price, get yourself some Pringle chips. Their semi transparent lid does the same thing.

It is really cheap as chips... and I doubt the eBay item listed comes with chips at all

The transparent, plastic can lids should do the trick as well (like the one's people use to keep on an opened can of pet food).

so with the pringle lid are you putting it over the lens and take a photo or just take a photo with the lid in frame?

i am unsure how this is supposed to work.

and i assume if the light changes (perhaps locations, sun movement etc) a new 'pringle lid shot' will need to be taken for references?

and does any pringle lid work? i read its only the stark white ones.

their 'before' pic is very extreme!

You want a transluscent one - similar in density to the diffuser that comes woth your flash unit.

You set your camera to make a custom wb reading, cover your lens with it, point the camera at your subject, and then take the reading. RTFM for more finely honed instructions, including details of which buttons need to be pressed.

Yes, you're correct that if your lighting changes (or your subject, for that matter) then you need to redo your settings, but that shouldn't be a major deal. Once you get the hang of it it's really a trivial process, although oftgen the basic wb settings, tweaked a notch or two down (I find) seem to be more than adequate.

On our front page, ahve a look at the tutorials. There's one there that, IIRC, tells you how to use the Expodisc for doing this.

I suspect you'll find it entirely appropriate to this discussion.

The larger cans now seem to use the clear ones. I found the smaller pringles tubes often still have the translucent lids... well, for me anyway. Maybe they were just stale old ones that'd been around for a bit.

7-11 probably still have the old ones .Next to the stale twisties

i bought one of these to see how well it worked before outlaying for a expodisk
a friend has a expodisk & swears by it
i use the same one you have a link too & find it works great
yes i tried the pringles lids first & they have changed thier lids hence they dont work on the ones they use now lol
I bought from the same ebay seller as yr link & find it works great & has saved me shelling out the high price of the expodisk
I used it in the hospital where my new grandson was born where there was 2 different types of light sources & i couldnt use flash worked great much better than auto WB

Will cutting a piece out of a plastic milk-jar or bottle work?

they do seem like a good flash diffuser, silky as milk lights?

I'm sure the large premium for the original expodisc can be justified.

but for me, not now

I've been using the inverted dome from my Lightsphere PJ II - works like a charm

However, this looks like a much cheaper alternative to the expodisc, and probably works just as well (while being only 10% the build quality )
