Hi all, I already have purchased a very nice background hanging system which can take a 9.75 ft (~3M) wide by over 10ft high. It's very nice, air cushioned... a lovely christmas present

The question now though, what can I hang of this thing?

I've been looking around and it ranges from muslin to paper and the more I look at photoshoots that inspire me at present the backdrops are VERY smooth so I'm guessing paper over material...

So what do you recommend and where would you recommend purchase? (I live in the sunshine coast of QLD).

They look like, the very popular, 3m wide roll pf paper.

They greys in the pics can come from the white paper (snow) or soft greys.

Dont know about QLD shops, but most can get in for you, examples at http://www.vanbar.com.au

I got mine for about $130. Its 3m wide, by 11mm long, and you just roll out what you need, and cut off as it gets grotty. (recommend a working mat for test shoots, to minimise dirt).

Be VERY CAREFUL not to crease as these show up has horrible shadows...

An old pro (film days) once recommended the use of vinyl flooring. It can be painted & repainted at will for any effect you want. & it is much more durable than the paper backdrops sold by the likes of Kayell.

Further off-cuts can come surprisingly cheap from flooring stores that just want to get rid of the end of a foll.

Or buy a large sheet of white canvas or similar, some blue and some white and some gray water-based paint and an old mop. Make your own. Check the web for designs you like and be sure to make the outside edges darker.

most use paper over material simply because if the model walks around on material shoes move the material around too much you end up with lots of ripples

paper can be taped down and if the model is jumping around or spining it paper backdrops dont move around as much

thing with paper is it gets dirty easily scuff marks and all
and some rolls are quite expensive $300+

but nothing some post production cant fix

if you find that your going through alot of paper and spending heaps replacing it you may consider building a plyboard backdrop like this
and just paint over it when it gets too dirty overall cost woudl be much cheaper than replacing 2 rolls of paper backdrops over 1 year

Has anyone used a clear perspex sheet, over paper, for a nice reflection underneath the subject?

Assuming paper is set up as an infinity curve, do you see the back of the perspex sheet?

What thickness have you used? Perspex, or poly?

Just wondering if anyone in here has expereince with, before I shell out and its a fizzer...
