Memory Card Query

Postby SoCal Steve on Tue Feb 01, 2005 6:52 pm

Thanks in advance for your help here. There's something I'm missing but I can't figure out what.

I just got my D70 a couple weeks ago after my Coolpix 5000 died along with a 256mb Viking CF card. While I'm waiting for delivery of a 1GB card I have only a 32mb card on hand.

Here's the question part: according to the manual a 256mb card should hold 44 Raw images. That would then mean that the 32mb card would hold about 10-12 Raw images. Instead the camera indicates only 2 Raw images can be stored on the empty card, 8 Fine Large JPEGs, etc. Far less than expected. What gives? Probably some simple explanation, but it eludes me so far. javascript:emoticon('')

Thank for being here to help.

As explained in the manual, the 256Mb card does indeed hold about 44 nefs - the manual also indicates that the camera displays a capacity of 22. I get about 40-41 RAW+JPEG. A 32Mb card will hold about 5 (32/256 x 44 = 5.5) so the camera will probably display 2 or 3.

Cheers

Memory Card Picture Capacity

Postby SoCal Steve on Tue Feb 01, 2005 7:26 pm

Thanks Digitor that was fast and it helped a lot!

It looks like you actually get to use a little less than 25mb of a 32mb card after it does its thing. Then the math all makes sense.

Thanks again!

SoCal Steve - welcome to the forum :) .

I see that digitor has answered your question. Bring on the 1GB CF Card.

The 32mb card would not even make a good paper weight.

Cheers,
fozzie

SoCalSteve,
Hi! what part of SoCal you're?
The 1Gb card will give you lot of juice, perhaps last you more than a day to shoot in RAW(NEF).
Then next one get another 1Gb card and you won't worry running out of "film"

I guess so - or to put it another way, you need at least 7 megs free to take another shot. Hope your 1Gb arrives soon....

32mb Card

Postby SoCal Steve on Tue Feb 01, 2005 7:48 pm

Fozzie -

Couldn't agree more. 32mb was the joke card that came with my coolpix 5000. But I gotta use something for three more days!
I plan to buy one additional 1Gb card a month for the next three months for a total of four. That should be reasonable. Also plan to buy an SB800 next month. I have to shoot my nephew's wedding at the end of May.

I've been taking pictures and developing B&W film since the 1960's.
I also have an N70 with a 35-80mm f4-D (fair) and a 70-210 f4-D (better). I also have an old Nikon Ftn on loan to my daughter. Don't know if that lense will work on manual with the D70, but it's about 50-55mm f1.8 as I remember.

Any suggestions on a flash bracket and camera case?

Maybe it would hold down a cigarette paper, but that's about all

I'm an old darkroom hack too - and in the last few years I've owned a couple of slightly disappointing P&S cameras as well. The D70 is the best thing since sliced bread I reckon, it's great at last to be able to do it all again, but digital! (And I get to use some of my old lenses)
