Hi,

what sort of lenses would a "pro" landscape photographer use? I tend to shot a lot of landscape and at the moment im still just rocking around with the kit lense, so yeah what sort of lenses are generally used for this application?

thankyou :D

Hmmm, if i was going to do Ken Duncan type landscapes i'd think about a 28mm 2.8f.

For Panos i will seriously consider a 50mm 1.4f or the above.

But a 12-24mm would be almost essential as Birdy says......

Of course it all depends on what type of Landscapes you want to do. Is it mountains, valleys, open wild plains, deserts, forests, floodplanes, swamps, etc......

24/2.8 is apparently a good one for landscapes. I have not tried landscapes with this lens - yes I have got it - not my style of shooting.

Cheers

Matt.

Hm thanks for the info - and yeah your right Killakoala, guess it does depend on what type of landscape.

One question however (forgive me if im talking crap here, im learning everday :P), landscapes typically you want good depth of field right,so because of that you'd use typically small apertures? If so then say a 50mm 1.4 prime would be well, still good but you wouldnt really use it for its large aperture?

comments? :P

17-55DX
17-35

Both lenses know for minimal distortion...

My best shots are landscapes (I'm not saying I am a pro) and my dream hiking kit would be:

12-24DX
+
17-55DX
+
70-200VR (some times you want to go in tight on a peak or feature)
+
tc17e (many landscapes have birds :) )

never seen a fish like the 10.5 used by a pro landscape dude but it would give some interesting views i know some sports guys that do lifestyle shots with a fish and they look cool especially the "athlete in environment" shots which are basically landscapes.

i think the core of a pro landscapers lenses would be the 17-55 and 12-24.

however i hate to say it but if i was a pro landscape photographer, as in that is where i earned my money i would have a 1Ds mkII and a probably 6x6 MF with a digital back there is no compensation for the MP and full frame in landscapes you can use ultrawides like the 12-24 on a croped frame but honestly it's not the same.

however i'm not a pro landscaper and never will be so for my forays into the area i will be using the 12-24 sigma(saving) and the 18-70 kit lense does me fine :)
