OK I have now offiocially given up on the SB800 Flash User Manual.

I have succesfully worked out how to use most functions on camera but cannot get it to fire remotely off camera.

Cam someone explain the process in easy steps that this dummy can follow.

If I got your question right, that's easy. Set D70 built-in flash to commander mode, set SB800 to remote mode, group A, channel 3. That's it
