What is a 5th battery?

Hi,

Can someone enlighten me on what a 5th battery is?
I know that it is neither a Nikon SD8A pack nor a Quatum1+
As the forum refers to them as an addition on top or extra to SD8A

Is the 5the battery a d70user thing? And where can I get more information on this item.
I did a quick search on the forum without much help, as it keeps referring to them without much information….may be I should search harder. I just presume that everyone in D70user forum know what it is and that the answer is archived?

It’s an extra battery compartment that you get when you buy the SB800 - you can either run with four batteries in the SB800 or remove the battery cover and add the 5th battery compartment

So is this a SD800 only module? As my SB80DX does not have one.

Well it have been a long time since I used my SB80DX Speedlight and it is only now I am looking to learn how to really use it, rather than just use it for fill flash in program mode.

Actually the flash was not something I used often and always thought the built in Speedlight was good enough and until someone showed me the difference it can make and now I am a convert. Unfortunately now the flash goes off everywhere  (as long as people allow me or if it is suitable to the subject)

As stated the 5th battery is used as an add on to the SB800 to give reduced recycling times, used typically with continuous shooting, but not necessary with normal shooting.

Your SB80DX is not compatible with the D70, I am sure I will be corrected if wrong, only the SB800 & SB600 are recommended. There is now I believe an after market flash unit available.

Apart from differences in trigger voltages, the SB800 & SB600 are the only speedlights that will iTTL meter. ie meter the light via the camera lens.

Suggest you research more on this topic before continuing with the SB80DX.

The SB28 is fine with the D100 and it can be used with the D70 but you do not get the iTTL function as per the SB800/600

D100 does not have I-TTL only D-TTL.

Every reveiw says I-ttl is better but not for a D100 as it does not support I-TTL so I will stay with the SB80DX for now.

though i would love to get a Quantum QB1+ for faster flash recycle.

I was interested in finding out what the fifth battery was but I will wait till D100 breaks down before I upgrade the flash.

The Sb-800 does more and better than the SB-80Dx on the D100, I have the SB-80DX as well and can tell the difference in using two difference flashes, but it's not worth it to upgrade to the SB-800, the monies you save may go toward the VR camp.
