Help for a newbie please.

I have just upgraded from my faithful F4S to the wonderful world of digital SLR'S. My wife bought me a D300 body for Christmas, but, due to supply problems only arrived last week.

I would like to post my first pic on the First Image forum but can't work out how to.

Can anyone help a computer illiterate person please?

Hi, congrats, and welcome John!!

First of all, have you got your own web hosting service, photo hosting or a web space set up?

If yes, simply upload you photo to your hosting service and post the link to this forum.

For example, I upload my photo named "p1008723564-2.jpg" to the site.

It becomes active as a link to the photo as http://www.gallery.yiphphotography.com/ ... 3564-2.jpg

In the forum you click the "IMG" button on the editor (located below the subject line)

Put in the link to the photo:

For more info on hosting images, please refer to other posts being made on this forum. Many members here use SmugMug, Zenfolio, or Flickr as their image host. Just a follow on from my friend who is still undecided about which camera to buy. This is some information from a camera sales person.....true or false?

"The Nikon D80 is a very nice camera, however, it is one of the few DSLR’s that does not have dust removal for its sensor. This can be a very serious problem as dust is a constant issue with this type of camera."

It's a minor issue. It's not a serious problem. It's marketing bullshit.

Yes, Sony took over Minolta. Minolta made some great cameras, and some great lenses. Sony make stuff that's deigned to last about ten minutes longer than the applicable warranty.

Your friend should be looking at either the D80, or the equivalent Canon.

Sony took over Minolta over two years ago, which means that it's at least two years since Minolta might have won any awards. How relevant - how up-to-date - is that statement by this salesperson, in referring to such out of date information?

How about asking about how good the lens range is? How current are those lenses? Most of what he's mentioned is little more than marketing blather, trotted out because the camera has no real advantages over the Nikon or Canon.

What is Sony's market share in the DSLR space? It's with good reason that it's in the single digit realm.

Which lenses, as in by whom?

You can get similar kits from both Nikon and Canon, btw.

And Nikon Oz have $200 cashback on the D80.

Be careful of the marketing bullshit. Your salesperson sounds like he was reading from a script, rather than talking from any basis of any actual product knowledge.

The inbuilt dust removal thingys never work anyway.. and you can buy dust removal kits to clean your own sensor so I wouldn't be making my decision based on that..

I'd be looking at other stuff like features and where do you purchase a new lens?.. Is the variety good?.. are they hard to get?.. whats the resale value like?..

Seriously Im a canon girl and rarely have anything great to say about Nikon... but if I had to buy either a Nikon or a Sony.. Nikon would win hands down with me..

I guess you could ask the 'camera sales person' if he has any real experience of DSLR photography

This question has been done to death a couple of times, but to save you trying to use the (less than helpful at times) search function, I'd say you shouldn't trust a salesperson who starts quoting sales blurgs in his reasoning.

For what it's worth, I have both a D70 and a D200. The former has had only one 'wet clean' in it's 35k shutter actuations so far, and the D200 has yet to need one after some 25k shots *touch wood*

You'll find if you are reasonably careful when you change lens then a air clean will usually do the trick. If not, a wet clean isn't all that difficult (if a little scary to start with).

Don't buy into marketing hype, especially Sony Marketing Hype

Spot on 6tee7. I have had great Canon printers, photocopier,binoculars, calculators and faxes but when it comes to cameras I like to stick with someone who specialises in cameras. N

The A350 is seriously overrated!! I played with one for a few hours, along with the A200 and the A700. The kit lenses that Sony offer are not great, but then again none of the kit lenses are brillant. The only nice thing about the A350 is the LiveView and the screen, but as a DSLR user I would never use LiveView, if I wanted that feature then I would buy a Fuji S100fs (rrp $849).

Give me a D80/60 any day! Or even a Canon EOS 400/450D!

gtstark is totally correct about salespeople who use marketing blurbs to sell cameras, they probably are either, after a SPIV, or have never used the camera's themselves, hence cannot form their own opinion on them. I work at a camera store.

I thought you used a Fuji S5 PRO, wouldn't that make you a Nikonian? The S5 PRO being derived from the Nikon D200? BTW how are you finding the S5? Still haven't been able to get my hands on one yet.

true...bindi-roo is only a half step away from the dark side. but in all truth, the beauty of the s5 is in its sensor. all nikon did was provide a body to sit it in. what a shame that type of sensor innovation wont be followed through on.

Bindii is actually a Canonite, and the Fuji is her second system.

But it is quickly becoming her favoured one.
