Nikon D40 with 70-300G

A friend on mine has a D40 body and is looking at using a 70-300G zoom with it. As I'm not familiar with this body and motor setup will this combination work with full autofocus features.

If not what options does she have on a schoolgirls budget.

Her aim is to do a bit of general sports shooting such as park soccer.

Barry I don't think that will AF unless it is the new AFS 70-300G. As you said student I assume not.

As Glen said, unless the 70-300 is the AFS version it's probably not worth bothering. There are no other 300mm lenses that will autofocus with the D40, except of course an assortment of 300mm f/2.8 primes. Your friend better avoids those because they look funny on a D40 ;)

A good choice would be either of the two 55-200mm AFS lenses (one with and the other without VR).

Cheers
Steffen.

The 70-300G will not AF, but the AF-S 70-300mm VR will (very expensive). The 55-200mm VR would be my recommendation, you can probably pick one up cheaply as well.

Thanks for your comments guys.

You are right aim54x. The two lenses you mention appear to be the only AF lenses suitable for the D40. Question now is whether 55-200 will give her the reach for her park footy shots. Its appear to be more affordable for her tho.

There are other options, but usually more expensive. I heard the Tamron 28-300mm VC, 18-250mm has just shipped in Nikon mount with the AF-S equivalent but am not certain if they are within the budget, nor available right at this moment.
