Wide angle lens

Postby peter on Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:04 am

hello,
I have a Canon 10d and looking to buy a wide angle lens. The Sigma 10-20mm is what I'm favouring. As I'm new to photography, would appreciate views re my choice and if anyone has one for sale please let me know.

thank you

Hi Peter, and welcome.

Please add a meaningful location to your profile, as stated in the FAQ and the message to newer members on our front page.

As to the Siggie 10-20 ... it's almost the best fun you can have behind a lens. It's probably my second favourite lens, and I can highly recommend it. The only other suggestion I might make is to also look at the Canon 10-22. Doesn't cost a whole lot more, greater range ...

Terrific lens. CRKennedy will pricematch it, so get it for $500 or so that way. We had a couple out on the Melb. photoshoot on Sunday, and they were much enjoyed :-)

:ot: Any good tele zooms from Sigma that I can get CRkennedy to price match? I really want a Nikkor 70-200 VR but if there is a sigma equiv then it may be another way around the problem of my lack of money.

i had a play with the Sigma 10-20 at the recent Melb meet and its simply mind boggling the perspective you get with this focal lenght. Check out the samples at

Google is a ripper search engine.

Some nice work there, Mak! It's a fun lens, that's for sure.

Here's my favourite (in small size, as I don't have an 800px version):

Hey Peter

Welcome to the forum. Regarding the sigma 10-20, it is no doubt a fine lens however see if its compatible with the 10D. Im only asking because the canon 10D only accepts EF mount lens. Since the sigma has the 'DC' designation this might cause a problem. However I could be wrong.

Regarding the canon 10-22 it will not be compatible with the 10D since its only an EF-S mount and you will need a 20D or higher canon camera..

You should also consider the excellent Tokina 11-16mm. I am sizing this guy up atm. Not sure wether to go for older brother tho. 12-24. Worth considering
D300+bat, D200+bat, 70-200VR, 18-200VR, 50f1.8, Tokina11-16f2.8, SB400, SB800

Ron! i never even knew that the 10D only accepts EF lenses..
in that case, tokina 12-24 and 11-16 i assume wont function/may cause damage also...

Peter of North Rocks, Sigma 12-24 might be your best bet... unless you want to reach into L territory

& Cameron, 70-200/2.8 Sigma.. how could you not know about this lens if you're in the market for a Nikkor 70-200? :P

Meh Juls you know what I am like about 3rd party glass and Sigma esp! But I will look it up and see what I get

EDIT* No VR (OS in Sigma speak) but it is nice price for grey. Maybe I should just keep saving for the Nikkor.

I'm confused - why ask about Sigma pricematch if you don't like Sigma?

It may have been an option, if it was OS then I would have seriously considered it. It is not that I totally dislike Sigma, it is just that I have seen/heard a lot about build quality issues. I do like the Bigma, for the range, but that also needs OS for me to be tempted. My point being that I dont actually look at 3rd party lenses all that often other than Tamron (only because I have a few that I really like), preferring to stick with Nikkor.

I've heard about them to, but never first-hand, bar one 10-20 that was soft on the left side. All the others are never actual events, just reports of reading things 'somewhere'.

All mine are great.

I used a 30mm f/1.4 in a shop (display) with a really rough manual focus. That kind of turned me off Sigma.

Not ebay, but they'll match real shops NP. (Cuts out some of the Asian shops, but it's still terrific.)

This is the one I used last time: http://www.tincheungcamera.com.hk/
