Question re old AF Nikkor lensFirstly, let me say that I have been reading posts from this forum now for a couple weeks and I have learned a heap as a result. I think this is an excellent forum. This is my first post so excuse me if I don't get the technicalities right.
I have an old AF Nikkor 35-135mm, f3.5-4.5 lens with only 5 pins on it wheras my new 18-70mm kit lens I got with my D70 has 10 pins. Is there anything that won't work properly with this old lens on my D70? It appears to work fine so far. The shots are sharp so I've started using it to get the extra focal length. Thanks
Johnd - welcome to the forum and your first post.
As far as I know Nikon have made 3 models of the 35-135 - 2 of them have auto focus and the third Ai-S would have to be used as a manual focus lens on the D70. If you can give us the serial number of the lens we can do a check as to which lens it is. But, I suppose, one has to ask the question - do you get auto focus? Chris

John D, everything will work fine. Not sure what all the extra pins are for but some of them will be for AFS (motor inside the lens) versus AF which is motor in camera with a little screwdriver sticking out to wind the focus on. You can see the screwdriver at 7 o'clock. AFS is quicker and quieter
Hi Chris, I've seen a couple of people reference the ability to look up serial numbers... Where do you do this?? Cheers, John

Thanks for the info Chris and Glen. Serial number is 392578. It does auto focus OK. I checked the lens out and can see the little screwdriver slot and yes it does focus a lot slower and noiser than my AFS kit lens. So that's the main difference between AF and AFS lenses? I took the AF lens out today to take a few pics and was quite happy with the results. The shots seem as sharp as with the AFS lens.
Thanks again for the info. Cheers John
