In-camera sharpening

Hi,

Just wanted to know what most of you use for in-camera sharpening. I use med-high, I think, but almost always do a bit more with PS CS in PPing stage. Is doing PPIng USM after the in-camera too much? Would you recomend med-low and then see how it is PS CS? Also, when I shoot RAW is sharpening info tagged to the file or is it permanently sharpened. I know ACR allows sharpening but don't know whether it uses the imbeded info or not - my guess that it doesn't, if doesn't curves.

Thanks
Alex

Alex - I don’t use any in-camera sharpening, etc. as I prefer to have to control after downloading the RAW image in PS.

Chris, so you set 'none' for sharpening?

Sure do - my reasoning is that the amount of control the camera can have over sharpening can not be as good as NC or PS sharpening controls.

Thanks, Chris.

That's what I thought. May be it's time to change my setting to the same.

Cheers

Maybe I'm missing something here re theory but I have my D70 set to medium high and when I open them in PS they are NEVER too sharpened out of the camera????

Quite the opposite actually, USM is always part of my workflow...

I prefer to have as much control as possible so I set sharpening to 0. However if you shoot in RAW, i dont' think this matters much as you can reset it in NC during PP.

Alex,

If you shoot in raw, the settings are applied, but can be modified in your PP to any of the available in-camera values, so if you feel an image has been over-sharpened by the camera (something I've yet to see) you can always reset it to zero and thus there's no loss of control.

If you're shooting jpg, it's a one trick pony, and the settings are applied, and the fat lady sings.

Thanks guys,

I didn't realise that NC has any control over sharpening in RAW apart from USM.

Gary,
what would you recommend the camera sharpening be set to when shooting RAW :?:

I shoot RAW and set in-camera sharpening to None.
If you choose a value other than none, the camera doesn't actually apply any sharpening directly to the image, it merely adds a "tag" to the image for later use.
Of course, if shooting JPEG, any in-camera sharpening IS applied to the image itself.

Steve,

I shoot raw + jpg, and have my in-camera sharpening set to medium.

I'm with Cricketfan, I have mine set to none. I prefer full control, but that is just my personal choice.

So does the RAW convertor in PS CS allow you to undo the sharpening in a RAW image or is the sharpening only applied to the JPEG version of the image and not the RAW :?:

Steve

Raw is just that - untouched. The in Camera sharpening is applied IN CAMERA only to the jpeg.

In the case of Raw, all in camera changes are recorded as tags along with theimage for interpretation by the raw converter and can be ignored and or altered BEFORE applied to the image during PP.
