If it's 85/1.8 AF and mint condition, then it's a bargain.

Go for 24-120. I've got one, best lens Nikon ever made. Forget about the 85mm and get your mate to sell it to me

Even for a non-D, that's a fantastic bargain.
My 85 1.8D is one of my favourite lenses.
You are really going to enjoy it - great bokeh.

Hi Stephen
a D Lens is one that can transmit distance info to the camera, to help with Auto Focussing, whereas a "non D" Lens does not.
Not really that exciting....

Hi Aussie Dave
I also thought a "D" lens mean't that it had an appeture ring which allows you to set the appeture on the lens.

I'm not 100% sure on my answer here, hopefully someone more qualified will correct me if I am wrong:
D Lens sends distance info to camera (also has aperture ring)
non-D Lens does not send distance info (also have aperture ring) - typically an older style lens, ie. 50mm 1.8 as opposed to the newer 50mm 1.8D
G Lens, made for dSLR's, does not send info to camera and does not have aperture ring
Please correct me if I am wrong....

Nope, G = D but without aperture ring.
Edit: Maxwell page on Nikkor nomenclature.

thanks for clearing that up. After seeing your post, I now feel like an idiot. Of course the G Lens sends info.....I have my kit lens sitting right next to me and I still typed the wrong info.
Next time I'll think for 5 more seconds before typing.....

Just to clarify a bit further ...
Dave, you suggested that the G lens is for DSLRs; this is not correct.
D sends distance info.
G has no aperture ring.
D/G fit and work properly on most Nikon SLRs produced over the last 15 years, be they digital or film. The 70-300G is one such lens, and it works on my F801, Leigh's F65, and both of our D70s.
DX is the nomenclature used to indicate a DSLR (only) lens.
