Lenses to use for my D70

Postby bfoale on Mon Dec 12, 2005 9:56 am

Hello I need some advice on lens. I have recently bought a new Nikon D70 and have an 18-70mm lens and an 80-200mm. One thing I found though is that my 80-200mm just doesn't get the distance so wondering if using a teleconverter will be any good or whether use it as a back up lens or 'trade in' for something like a real tele lens like a Sigma 50 -500mm. Is there other lens I should be looking into.

With a wide angle zoom what is advantages/disadvantages between say a 10-20mm to a 12-24mm. What lens do you recommend for wide angle photos. Im really keen to get a good lens first time and start taking wide angle photos photos.

Same goes with macro lens. What is advantages of 50mm, 28mm and 105mm.

Any help and advice will be of great assitance.

Thanks in advance.

A couple of points, and a couple of questions.

First of all, it's a requirement that you include your location in your profile; please attend to this as soon as you can. I'd refer you to the FAQ on this point, and strongly suggest that you acquaint yourself with this document.

Regarding your 80-200, which version do you have, and by whom? How fast (maximum aperture) is the lens?

How far short of your expected reach does it fall?

Please also use the search facility here; this forum is littered with discussions of the 70-200, 80-400, Bigma, and various TCs that will fit the D70, and a search of those sorts of topics will give you much food for thought.

Hi bfoale and welcome to the forum.
In my opinion, the 18-70 kit lens that comes with the D70 is a damn good lens. And if the 80-200 you've got is the 2.8 Nikkor, then you've got a brilliantly sharp tele lens. I've been tempted to look at the 50-500 Bigma and maybe will one day, but I'm just so pleased with my 80-200. What it misses out on with reach, it makes up with quality. I wouldn't be too fast to trade in a 80-200 2.8. Some of the TCs will work on it, but you'll loose some sharpness, so like many things in life, it's a trade off.

Cheers
John

I have a Kenko 2X TC that i can match with my 80-200/2.8. it's shabby wide open, i usually go for apertures over f/11. the bigma sounds like a good idea. how far do you need to shoot?

i haven't used the 10-20mm but recently sold a nikkor 20mm/2.8 and replaced it with a 12-24DX. it's a ripper, very pleasing to use.
