A macro lense is the answer, but what would be the difference from let's say a 200mm lens at a short distance from the subject at 200 where the subject fills the frame, is that cheating macro?
Does this question make sense or sound a little stupid?

There is no such thing as cheating macro. Use the best tool that will produce the best image. Then post it.

You're right, whatever tool used or method used, is not the issue, just the results.
Now that we are on this subject, the autofocus with the macro mode on the D70 can't focus well at all, I get the beep of focus at about 18" but the focus is not sharp, manual focus would help? or changing AF area mode to center spot or closest subject? I'll experiment when I get home, but would like to get an opinion, maybe I am asking too much from my D70 without a micro lense.
