Logging on to this fantastic site??!!!

Faaaarrrrrrk :!:

I'm not an absolute beginner but I feel like an absolute idiot.

How do I log on to this freaking site??!!!! :?:

I almost exclusively use the "View posts since last visit" link to keep up to date with this site. There is no chronological order view to use as an alternative.

So... recently when I log on I get taken back to the home page and have to log on again. After successfully loging on the second time the number of posts since last visit is zero. I thought I had fixed this by changing my favourite shortcut from d70users.com to dslrusers.com Now the problem has returned.

What gives and how can I fix this permantently? PS. I know this question was recently asked but I can't find it using search.

Cheers
Dean

Guys

I had this problem when I had a brief flirtation with Opera, but don't have this problem in either Firefox or IE. And this works even if I put http://www.d70users.com. Please give some more detail on browsers, OS and privacy settings.

Oh, and at the risk of insulting your intelligence, you have ticked the "remember me" checkbox haven't you

What browsers are you using?

I simply use the primary host domain - d70users.net - as the login host, and it works, and I have no problems using Firefox.

Make sure thatr your cookie settings are cleared, and if you still experience issues, select ANY message, and then select Login from the menu at the top of that screen.

As to no chronological order, that is simply not correct: USE THE RSS FEED!

That's probably your problem.

Just get Firefox, and consign IE to it's rightful receptacle.

Gary's observations aside, as I said above, a quick test shows IE works on my machine here at work (ooops here comes the boss... )

Stubbsy,

Thanks for the reply.

First up, this is a new problem which has only come up over the last two weeks or so. I have not made any changes which would cause this problem.

I'm using IE v6 at home and work. I accept cookies and have the password "remembered" by Windoze. I don't use the "Log me on automatically" setting, nor do I want to.

I'm thinking the problem has something to do with the way in which the various domain names forward/redirect but I don't understand this stuff so I could be wrong.

I can tell you that there have been a couple of security changes in the upgrade of the site to .17, which you would have seen from Tuesday evening last week.

Anything before then is likely to be at your end, and anything beyond that, using the d70users.net domain should address it

And remember that if you have automatic updates from Microsloth turned on, god only knows what's happenning to your system. Under those circumstances, all bets would be just like Basil's duck.

Its quite possibly corrupt cookies, I've had a similar issue in the past.

Does this mean that PHPBB and this site's implementation of it does not support the number one browser by volume and therefore (arguably) the defacto world standard?

Why would one limit one's market?

Dean PS. I'll try the d70users.net and I bet that'll fix the problem.

I've got it too on Firefox, but in looking at it, I think it's part of a security measure for the new phpBB system.

OK. What software would I use with the RSS Feed?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the RSS feed is simply(?) a stream of the posts in the order posted? If so then it may not be what I would ideally want.

What I would like is a chronological view listing topics in order of most to least recent post for the topic. The view would be just like the "Posts since last login" but would be endless and I could scroll back in time as far as I wanted.

All that aside, if I can get logged on successfully, the current functionality is just fine.

Try FeedReader... It works well for me...

While RSS provides you with a stream of posts in the order that they occurred, it also allows you to sort on subject, so that you can quickly browse through new topics... Give it a try...

Quite possibly.

And if you think I give a flying fuck about IE, think again.

Microsoft do make some best of breed products. IE is nowhere to be seen in that company.

So, if you want to use IE, you're more than welcome. As Stubbsy says, it works fine for him, so - as it is for all of these sorts of issues, most likely to be an environmental issue.

I really don't recommend IE, and I do as little as possible to support it.

Sorry.

And there is no correlation whatsoever between popularity and quality.

Except perhaps an inverse one.

Could someone please post a Sticky or something, entitled "RSS for the dummies". I for one would like to read a step by step on how to do this. I'm using firefox and I have no idea how to set it up.

Gary,

I took your advice and changed my link to d70users.net and I was just able to log on sucessfully first go. I didn't need to make any other changes such as clearing cookies. So my guess remains that it is something to do with the way d70users.com and dslruser.com redirect to d70users.net at log on.

Thanks for your help. You can lock this thread if you like.
