I thought ide share some info i came across that might help others interested in upgrading their flash power, or just looking at alternatives to the sb-800(Gn 56 at 105mm).
Ive seen some shootout results that suggest a metz units improved performance over the sb-800...
Dear Ladies & Gentlemen,
meanwhile we are able to provide some new flash units in our flash line
dedicated to a Nikon D70. Please note, a D70 is loaded with a so called
i-TTL flash control but true TTL is no longer provided. The following
flash units can be used with i-TTL on a D70:
mecablitz 28 AF-3N,
mecablitz 44 AF-4iN,
mecablitz 54 AF-1N,
mecablitz 54 MZ-4iN (incl. adapter SCA 3402 M3).
Also we have planned to equippe flash units of type mecablitz 44 MZ-2
with i-TTL in the future. Existing flash units of type mecablitz 44 MZ-2
are planned to be re-load by a new software. In addition the adapter
SCA3402 version M3 is required.
All previous flash units with SCA3002 system like mecablitz 54 MZ-3, 54
MZ-4, 70 MZ-4 & 70 MZ-5 are not able to support i-TTL with a Nikon
D70. These types of flash units can only be used in auto flash mode with
manual settings or in manual flash mode. But a connection of the adapter
SCA3402 M3 is possible as well to take over some data provided by
camera.
Flash units of SCA3000 system like mecablitz 32 Z-2, 32 MZ-3, 40
MZ-.. and 50 MZ-5 can not be used with adapter SCA3402 M3. In this case
only the simple standardfoot 301 can be attached for using them in auto
flash mode or manual flash mode on a D70.
Against it, flash units of type 45 CL-4 and 60 CT-4 can be connected
with cable SCA3000C and adapter SCA3402 M3 working in auto flash mode or
in manual mode. In this case, flash features like indications on camera,
flash sync speed control and 2nd curtain sync are possible. But, simple
auto flash mode must be used in future also.
Unfortunately, any up-grade from version M or M2 to M3 of the adapter
SCA3402 is definitely not possible. Apart the different software, a
changing of the hardware inside the adapter was necessary as well.
Flash units of type mecablitz 44 AF-4iN, 54 AF-1N and 54 MZ-4iN allowing
beside i-TTL the so called D-TTL flash control for cameras like D100 and
D1x as well. Also the mentioned flash units can be used on previous
types of Nikon AF cameras.
Best regards
