They're here.

Postby gstark on Tue Apr 01, 2008 9:09 am

Ok, they're here!

I have a supply of B&W CF cards - they arrived from Poon yesterday. These will be availble from
me directly, on a first come, first served basis. As you may have noticed, Peter (Stubbsy) has
had one for several weeks, and I think he has been more than satisfied with the results he's been
getting.

Image

They are better than switching your camera into B&W mode; they have on board processing
that basically emulates a photoshop action and converts the image to a black and white one,
and also adds a couple of actions, adding some grain. much better than a simple grey-scale
conversion. As can be seen by the image below, these are the digital equivalent of Kodak Tri-X.

Image

You can fine tune the cards too: they come with an ancilliary application that lets you format
the cards and specify the level of in-card processing that you want to have done. For instance,
you can specify different levels of grain to be added to the image, or you can opt for soft
(low contrast) medium, or hard (high contrast) processing to be applied.

8GB only, the price is Au$85 for cards with a Nov 09 expiry date. With correct storage, these
cards can be used virtually forever. I have 2 dozen of these available; one per member please;
please add your expression of interest in this thread. I will send you a PM to arrange payment
details etc.

I have a dozen expired cards - March 08 is the expiry date on the cards. Also 8GB, but an
absolute bargain at just $10 each. These are the cards Peter used for his images. As you can
see from Peter's images, there is no problem due to the cards being expired. Same ordering deal
for the fresher cards; just specify in your message which cards you want.

Gary,

I can't see these in the bargains section! I'm really keen on getting a B&W card. At $10 I could even accept a card which has passed its used by date - as long as they have been stored correctly.

No, they're not in the bargains section. These are already (as can be seen in the image) in my hands. The bargains section stuff gets ordered from HKG.

The expired cards are just fine: look at Peter's images.

Mick (oscar) is first on the list.

I would like one too. Are there any available from fresh stock, or are they all expired?

Doesn't matter if they are expired, as evidenced by Stubbsy's work, but just wondered.

Trevor, two dozen fresh stock in hand.

Mick, did you only want one of the expired ones, or did you want one of each?

Yeah, sorry! Just reread your post and saw that fresh were available.

I wonder if they are like wine, and need to be stored until an optimal time?

It might be better to get the older stock after all - I just love that look in Peter's images.

Noted.

As for getting two, I want to make sure that there's enough from my stock for all who want them. If we have surplus, sure.

What temperature were they stored at?
I hear that 3.5 is the optimal temp and extends the life of the card 4 stops past the expiry date.

Put me down for an expired one. I'll keep it in the freezer in a vapour lock bag. That should extend its life.
One question though: Will it fit in my FM2?''

EDIT: One more question. Serious this time. Now it is April, do they still work? It is not beyond the realms of possibility that they have put a sunset into the card's software.

Gary,

I was comtemplating getting one of each...just to compare the two. However, as I had not long ago purchased an 8gb sandisk card, I will just stick with the expired card for now.

Using expired B&W CF cards isn't normally an issue. If they are way out of date they might start to show some whiffs of colour here and there, but that's easily fixed up in PP.

I just had a quick google to see if a better price or delivery could be arranged. It seems you had these cards in stock over three years ago. See thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3436&p=41066

There were no positive reviews on the performance then so I might wait a while pending a more viable and reliable satisfied customer post.

Then again, if the price is right, I'm always sucker. Can I buy three oldies on the proviso I only pay after they arrive.

They were available, but not through us. The technology has significantly advanced since those days (as you can well imagine) and these are significantly faster in terms of i/o speed, as well as usable ISO.

Exactly.

My apologies to all whose posts were deleted, but in the interests of having a bit of fun, that was deemed to be necessary.

As a suggestion to those who do catch on but feel a need to let people know that the're in on the joke, rather than just spoiling the fun, think of a way you can make a post, but join in the fun. For instance, Mr Darcy's "Will it fit in my FM2?" seems to me to be an indication that he's aware of what we're doing, but rather than detracting from the fun, he adds quite a bit to it.

Now, where are those deeds for the oceanfront land in Broken Hill?

Yes, Leigh did something similar last year, but I don't think it was for April Fools' Day.

And the work that you see here today is all Leigh's handiwork as well. He did a masterful job in photoshop, and I think that the concept of an expiry date on a CF is simply brilliant.

Actually I did. It was for April Fools Day and was only for my blog.

This year, Dad decided to rip off my idea and still have me do the work. And the addition of the expiry date was my idea too. So... in essence... I perfected my own joke.

And then made a few of my own. I'll provide links in a few minutes. They're jokes for gamers though, so if you've never played Half Life, you won't have a clue what I'm on about.
